I've heard, in some cases, regarding the same model, that the 12" had a better overall sound than the 15". In other words, hit harder, was louder, etc. So what's the deal? Are these just a few subjective experiences? Are the 15" tops always suppose to do a better job in terms of sound than the 12" version? If not, what exactly is the reason for someone choosing a 15" over the 12"?

What you heard may very well be true for a specific product series buuuuuutt..... There is a hell of a lot more at play here than driver size, I have heard nice 15inch tops that blow away cheaper 12 inch tops in terms of midrange clarity. All depends on specific products, program content, the room, how a system is crossed over/processed,etc etc. Dispersion also has a lot to do with perceived performance of a product. But thats an intro to the complex answer, now for the simple "correct slightly more often than not" answer.... Generally, a 12 inch (in a "speaker on a stick" cab design) will get a bit less beamy up high towards the end of it's working range and cross over smoother than a larger driver. Conversely, a 15 will sometimes perform better in the low mid range, even when compared to a 12 crossed over to a sub. Again, hard to apply a rule of thumb here, as every system design is different. Still, more often than not, if I can only have two speakers for an event, if there is any kind of full range content I will steer towards 15s, but if I am going to have subs with a system, I will usually spec 12 inch tops over single 18 subs. But, just to say it one last time, every situation and system is different. Everything in audio is a tradeoff, you have to understand how the tools available to you will function and act accordingly. Anybody who peddles an "iron law" in audio that isn't directly related to a law of physics is probably selling something. Those who claim to break the laws of physics are def selling something...

Personally I prefer to use more speakers as opposed to bigger speakers. Subs always take care of the real low end. You dont need bigger mains to capture low end unless you don’t have subs. There’s no replacement for displacement. However In some instances where money is an issue and acoustic capabilities are lacking. 15s can add a bit of punch to the low end of your mix. Although usually at the cost of solid mids. So pick your poison carefully.
