Now do ANOVA. the t-distribution doesn't have mean and standard deviation as parameters. Like, why does the formula for the t-score mirror that for the z-score when the parameters for the relevant PDF's are totally different? First, to be pedantic, the t-distribution can have a mean and variance that differ from 0 and 1. For instance there is the noncentral t-distribution. Have you taken mathematical statistics? This is usually covered in that course, since it's one of the earlier "results" that leverages some of the content to address "Why the hell are we learning this?" in the context of a widely used scenario. The answer to this is a bit annoying to type out, but it stems from the fact that the t-distribution is defined as the ratio Z/√ (V/v) where Z is a standard normal random variable, and V is a Chi-square random variable with df=v. The formula for the test statistic of a t-test can be expressed in this manner. Wiki steps through the derivation of this Student's t-distribution in the section titled "As the distribution of a test statistic". And more generally, what even ARE test statistics? They're used as a way to summarize the information of the data into a single number which (when constructed as a random variable) has a known distribution under the null hypothesis. Edit to add: They can also be -- as is the case with the standard t-test statistics -- a means of getting rid of dependence on parameters (nuisance or otherwise).
