29: Hypothesis Test for a Population Proportion Calculator - Statistics LibreTexts
December 24, 2023 - Fill in the sample size, n, the number of successes, x, the hypothesized population proportion \(p_0\), and indicate if the test is left tailed, <, right tailed, >, or two tailed, \(\neq\). Then hit "Calculate" and the test statistic and p-Value will be calculated for you.

Do we actually need the test statistic to calculate p values?
Now do ANOVA. the t-distribution doesn't have mean and standard deviation as parameters. Like, why does the formula for the t-score mirror that for the z-score when the parameters for the relevant PDF's are totally different? First, to be pedantic, the t-distribution can have a mean and variance that differ from 0 and 1. For instance there is the noncentral t-distribution. Have you taken mathematical statistics? This is usually covered in that course, since it's one of the earlier "results" that leverages some of the content to address "Why the hell are we learning this?" in the context of a widely used scenario. The answer to this is a bit annoying to type out, but it stems from the fact that the t-distribution is defined as the ratio Z/√ (V/v) where Z is a standard normal random variable, and V is a Chi-square random variable with df=v. The formula for the test statistic of a t-test can be expressed in this manner. Wiki steps through the derivation of this Student's t-distribution in the section titled "As the distribution of a test statistic". And more generally, what even ARE test statistics? They're used as a way to summarize the information of the data into a single number which (when constructed as a random variable) has a known distribution under the null hypothesis. Edit to add: They can also be -- as is the case with the standard t-test statistics -- a means of getting rid of dependence on parameters (nuisance or otherwise). This is talked about more broadly as the concept of pivotal quantities . More on reddit.com
What does P-value less than .05 mean?
A P-value of .05 means there is only a 5% chance the same results would be achieved with a data set of random inputs. In other words, there is 95% confidence that the results of the experiment are real. The scientific community generally uses .05 as the threshold for statistical significance but in some cases even smaller numbers are used.

Does Statistical significance mean causation?
Yes, generally it is acceptable to conclude experimental data with statistically significant P-value indicates causation. However, a P-value of .05 still means there is a 5% chance you could achieve the same results with no difference between the two groups.

Why is .05 used as the threshold for statistical significance?
A p-value of .05 means if you ran the same experiment 20 times, you would see the same difference between test and control group 19 out of 20 times. The scientific community has collectively decided this is an acceptable threshold for determining the difference is real. Arguments can be made for even smaller P-values in some cases. Alternatively, P-value is sometimes abused and values greater than .05 are used.

The p-value is the probability of obtaining the current statistical result under the assumption that H0 is correct. If you decide to reject the H0, the p-value represents the probability of making a mistake, specifically a type I error — rejecting a correct H0.

Statistical Significance Calculator for A/B Testing
In our example, the results of the A/B test could be: Variant A: Out of 50,000 visitors, 500 users converted. Conversion rate of 1.00% Variant B: Out of 50,000 visitors, 570 users converted. Conversion rate of 1.14%. Then, you will calculate the z-score which measures how far the observed results are from the null hypothesis to determine if the difference between A and B is statistically significant. Additionally, you will calculate the p-value, which indicates the probability that the observed difference is due to random chance.
