Hi all! We have a failing Vermont Castings Vigilant that came with the converted barn that we live in. I have been scouring fb marketplace for an affordable replacement and found this Super 27 for sale. It is 2 hours away, so I haven’t seen it in person yet. It was manufactured in 2011. What are your thoughts? What questions should I be asking?
Our converted barn is about 1500 sq ft. The vaulted living room (where the stove will be located) is about 500 sq ft. The structure is very leaky (hoping to address air sealing and insulation this summer). The woodstove will be used in combination with ductless heat pumps. Happy to provide any additional context that is needed. Thanks!

I have the same stove. They’re one of the efficient stoves on the market. Their baffle system is second to none and gets an amazingly clean burn. Rates to heat around 2200 sq ft I believe. You won’t be disappointed with a pacific energy.

It's hard to tell looking at the photo inside, but if that's secondary air both at the rear and front of the baffle, then I think this would be a reasonably efficient, clean burning stove when operated correctly.. If it only has secondary combustion up front, maybe not so much... Maybe someone who owns one from this era can share their experience. In general PE stoves are well regarded.

I had a company in and got a quote to install a new outside chimney and a new Pacific energy super le. It's a little more than I thought at 9k (Canada) but I still want to move forward. Very reputable company.
Anyone here ever regret their woodstove or a previous fire burning appliance? I'm in the buy once, cry once camp. Am I crazy paying 9k?

Google says that is about $7k USD right now: I bought and self-installed a Woodstock Soapstone Ideal Steel two years ago. Built the hearth and chimney myself too. Took me days of hard work, was scarey/risky bc I have a very steep pitch to my roof, and moving that stove took a very real physical toll on me. In the end, I spend just under $5k USD. Only considering the increase in commodity prices, and $9k Canadian seems like a very fair deal! (I believe Woodstock has since raised their price $300 and Class A chimney has surely gone up, too.) The peace of mind you'll have knowing your stove has been properly and professionally is worth the cost. And finally, there is the satisfaction of watching someone else muscle that stove into place...

Truthfully, I'm not sure if the installation price is fair or not. But for what it's worth, I have had a Pacific Energy stove for about 7 years and I love it. It's been great for me.

August 26, 2021 - IMO that's a good deal, 2 seasons isn't even broken in yet. The house I grew up in had a Super 27, in fact my parents still have it, 17 seasons and it's still going. I have a great fondness for that stove, it's burnt an almost unimaginable pile of wood, 4-5 cords a season for 17 years.
