6 or 7 years ago we purchased a Palliser recliner / glider. I can’t recall the exact price but in the $1300 plus tax range. We thought we were investing in a chair that would last for a couple decades. Most gliders / recliners from big box stores at the time were less than half the price.
Turns out not only has this happened to us, but it’s happening to a ton of purchasers that bought Palliser furniture. I know of one other person who bought one a year before us…and their situation is even worse. Our local retailer has said they’ve pretty much stopped selling Palliser because of so many customer complaints.
The Palliser website and brand is all about quality. But just be careful. They don’t seem to be holding up like advertised. Their leather warranty is 5 years. The peeling seems to start immediately after the warranty is over.
I contacted them and I’m essentially SOL.
We are about to pull the trigger on a Palliser Leighton sofa with the semi - aniline leather upgrade. ? I will either add a ZG6 zero gravity chair the matching recliner to the purchase as well. For those who have experience with Palliser, is the furniture holding up well?
I am torn between paying for leather all around versus vinyl match on the back/sides. Does vinyl match have the same peeling issues of bonded leather?
Update: Purchased a Palliser Leighton reclining sofa with power articulating headrest and lumbar along with a ZG6 zero gravity chair. Opted to do both pieces in 3000 grade parlour semi-aniline leather all around. Looking forward to delivery in 6-8 weeks.
Bought Made in Canada Palliser Marymount leather sofa and loveseat 8 years ago. It's out of warranty after 5 years. This cracking then peeling off started right after warranty expired. Paid $3000 for the set. Was supposed to be good quality leather. I don't care how good or not good the leather quality is, a sofa should not crumble apart after 5 years. Looks like a cheap fake leather sofa you'd buy from a discount cheap imports store. NEVER AGAIN. So much for "Made in Canada" 🙄
No, not a political post, haha!
TL;DR: Palliser VS La-Z-Boy for a power leather reclining sectional?
We are thinking about replacing our family room furniture this winter now that we are home all. the. time.
We bought a Palliser leather sectional about a dozen years ago that has held up very well and is now in our basement. It was the upgraded leather and it has not faded or shown much wear even with kids and large dogs and well, life.
Now that we have aged a bit, what we once thought was ugly is now attractive - recliners, higher seats, high backs.
So my question is: how would compare the quality of Palliser reclining sectionals to those from La-Z-boy?
$$$ vs $$. Mexico vs. Mississippi. What do you think? We’ve looked at a ton of sofas and are down to one reclining sofa made by each company. Asher 41065 Reclining Sofa and 881 Southern Motion Marvel Sofa, undecided on power reclining. Our budget is around $2k.
(edit: removed a curse word and added models per angry comment below)
Looking for new sofas, the big box stores quality seems like garbage for what you pay. Any suggestions would be great.

After weeks of furniture shopping, I finally found a couple couches last night that I fell in love with. Unfortunately, after reading reviews, it sounds like they are both garbage bonded leather and won't last more than a year or two. Link for style reference Link 2
Can anyone provide some brands/stores that would carry something of this style? Midwestern US here (Ohio). Not entirely opposed to online ordering but would prefer to see it in a showroom if possible.
Hi Everyone. My parents are looking for new couch, perhaps even a pullout couch...Have you bought one that was quality made and didn't suck to sit or sleep on? They are looking for something that will stand the test of time and is beautiful to look at. I'm interested in your furniture store experience. Thanks in advamce for sharing your responses.
Probably ridiculous to ask, what exactly changed aside from covid in the last five years? In 2018 we bought a massive sectional for around 3K recliners & all. One of the nicer ones in our price range. It’s still in fantastic shape but we’re looking for a second set for our basement. The exact same set with one less piece is priced (same location) for over $5500. That’s almost double what we paid for less couch. We’ve gone to a few stores now but everything seems just so dang expensive.
Is this just the era we’re in of furniture? Is this the new normal or is there some supply chain issue that might bring prices down again? I was really excited to get a big comfortable couch for the family room but my gosh am I ever suffering from sticker shock.

edit ✍️ thank you for explaining the tarrifs to me, I was expecting some increase in pricing but doubled really just shocked me. I appreciate the explanation and will now go buy some costco lawn chairs instead (kidding! Sort of…)
The government significantly increased tariffs on imported furniture to make local made furniture more competitive. Stupidly enough local manufacturers like EQ3/Palliser couldn’t even make furniture fast enough to serve their clientele before that, so I’m not sure what was the point of that other than collecting more revenue.
There were some import tariffs that went into effect in 2021 (?) I believe which increased the cost of imported furnishings substantially. I could be off on the exact year.
I’m wanting to buy a new couch and loveseat, and I’ve spent most of my life buying cheap Jysk furniture or used stuff. I’m ok with spending $2,000 or so total, maybe a bit higher. Any recommendations for where to go? It seems like there’s a lot of furniture stores in Regina so I thought I’d see if anyone had recommendations instead of just aimlessly wandering through the couches in ten different stores.
I don’t want to order online because I want to be able to sit on it in the store. Also it needs to be somewhere that delivers.
I am in the market for a new couch after many years of second hand and overall cheap couches. For me, it’s a big deal to consider dropping a couple thousand dollars on furniture and quite frankly don’t want to mess it up.
I’m ready to make an investment into a couch that I will have for many many years but am totally new at this. I just want to get the best quality and deal for my money.
I’ve read some other stories about the pressure from salespeople while couch shopping and the overall experience being a bit sour. I’m usually pretty frugal and skeptical of a “too good to be true” deal.
I’ve bought from Konto and the Brick in the last ten years but it’s always been a futon for a couple hundred bucks. No salespeople really cared to jump at that. I won’t be looking there again and am considering Lazy Boy. Love seat particularly.
Does anyone have any experience with Lazy Boy or have suggestions about getting a good deal on a new couch ? Not looking to spend more than $3000.
Eternally grateful for anybody who shares their tips or experiences in/around Edmonton.
Edit: Wow ! So many responses which is awesome - I cant thank you all enough. I’ve got some real investigating to do before making any serious decisions.
Update: Went with Sofa Land. Prices reasonable and we got exactly what we were looking for. To be delivered this Saturday.
I found it interesting when I asked about the price, I was told that they wouldn’t negotiate prices and they are set. In other words, someone else couldn’t walk in there and get a better deal on the sofa. Found it odd a bit but after a whole day of looking and talking to salespeople I didn’t care anymore.
I am looking to purchase a new sectional for my condo, the one I currently have is great but just a bit too big. I’ve looked at a handful of sites and the few sectionals I have come across that I liked were easily a good $3,000+ which I cannot fathom, I’m not looking for something cheap but I also don’t want to break the bank. I know the general stores people purchase furniture from, i.e. Dufresne, Ashley, Leons, Wayfair etc., but was wondering what other furniture/home decor stores may be in Winnipeg and surrounding areas, or online, that sell quality furniture for a somewhat reasonable price. Thanks!! :)
Hey everyone. I just bought my first house and I’m looking to completely finish it with Canadian furniture. Wondering if you all had some recommendations. Not looking for insanely expensive but I am obviously willing to spend a bit more to buy Canadian. Thanks
Edit: I live in Ontario (north of Toronto)
Decor-rest furniture
Little bit more expensive than your typical crap from your big box stores but you’re paying for solid wood construction and every piece is custom made to order. They don’t have a pre-made inventory.
We’ve had 3 couches fall apart on us over the past 20 years and got fed up with it and told our sales person exactly that. They led us straight to the Decor-rest line. The showroom had an armchair that was only half upholstered on display. It was heavy and you could see all the bracing and supports in it.
I don’t think I’ve seen a negative review.
Edit: they’re based out of Vaughan.
Depends on where you are and what type of furniture you want. There are a few places around St Jacob's, Elmira and Waterloo areas where you can design furniture made by Mennonites. Theres a place in Morriston (Guelph Line, South of 401) that makes nice stuff. Home Hardware's main store in St Jacobs has nice furniture (believe it or not) but I'm not sure where its actually made.
