So, I have to renew my passport. I am trying to save a few bucks. I read that I can take my own passport photos with the aid of an app and then simply print the photos at a photo center for a few pennies per print. I can’t find such a place. Walmart, Staples, has one price $ for photos but a higher price $$$ for passport photos. Please recommend a place if you have done this before. Thank you
....assuming you don't have a nice printer and photo paper at home. I just did this and it may seem minor but the cost of a Walgreens passport photo print is over $18 here.
(1) Take passport photo at home (I used my phone). (2) Go to Walgreens, which doesn't have a 2x2 printing option to force people to buy the $18 passport photo package. (3) Order your photo as the minimum square size, 4x4, then click "edit". (4) Add a white border. (5) "Zoom out" until the border occupies the outer half of the frame. (6) Print your $0.44/ea passport photo instantly! Yeeeehaw
The significant edit here is to please be wary of the requirements specific to your passport agency's needs - read and know the nuances about facial expression/lighting/angles/accessories/etc., and consider using passport photo-specific apps online to help you fulfill those requirements. Knowing those nuances can save our butts, here in the States or elsewhere...even if we want or decide to pay the full price of a passport photo (or do anything else dealing with the requirements of a government agency).
Some have mentioned cheaply printing a 2x2 or 2x3 grid of 2x2in photos in one go instead of just printing one photo and wasting space on a thick border. This is smart. This is good. This is the way if you want to use the above tip and aren't doing so on the fly. And if you feel like it.
Feel like I'm going a little crazy, I have the file for my passport photo but I can't find anywhere to print it. CVS, Amazon Photo, FedEx don't have the option to print to 2x2 for store pickup.
Where have you printed your own passport photo file before??
Walgreens did mine. Try Walmart also.
You should be able to get 6, 2x2 photos on a standard 4x6 size. Some machines at like Walgreens will let you make a grid of them in-store. But you can also use whatever photo editing software to do it yourself and then take the file to go get printed. Random DIY guide
Gf is overseas and it will take forever for her to mail me her passport photo so where can I take her digital image and print out a physical copy?
TL;DR: Needed foreign passport photos, but photo shops were charging a fortune. Figured out a clever workaround to get 4R photos printed and cut to the right size for a fraction of the cost.
The Story: So, I needed passport photos for a foreign application, but the local photo machines were only offering fixed sizes (400x514mm) for a local passport, which wasn't what I needed. To make matters worse, the machine's price display was $4, but it turned out to be $8 when I used it. Plus, they didn't even have the size I required!
Step 1: The Shocking Alternatives: I checked out a nearby photo copy shop, hoping for a better deal. Turns out, they were charging a whopping $12 for the same service with local passport dimensions and an eye-watering $20 for foreign passport size. That's like the price of an Oppenheimer IMAX movie ticket!
Step 2: A Clever Solution: The shop lady offered an option: If I could provide a soft copy of the exact size, she'd print it for $10. Not ideal, but it seemed like my best option around.
Step 3: The Ingenious Idea: On my way back, I brainstormed alternatives. Why not print the passport photos as regular 4R size pictures and then just cut them out? A 4R photo costs only around $0.5 from what i searched online.
Step 4: Making It Happen: I spent a couple of hours finessing the dimensions using Photoshop (I'm no expert, mind you). Finally, I had the right template!
Step 5: Success! I returned to the shop, acting all casual. I asked about printing 4R photos – they were priced at $0.7 per piece, but there was a minimum of 5 pieces. I agreed and handed over the soft copy, secretly thrilled that they didn't catch on that I was printing passport photos.
Bonus Tip: Looking back, I should have prepared 4 more photos I wanted to print in 4R – could've made the most of the deal!
So, there you have it! With a little creativity and some Photoshop trial and error, I got perfectly-sized passport photos printed as 4R pictures for just $3.5. A huge saving compared to the usual cost.

Site above has all requirements listed.. as well as link to tool.
After you get a cropped photo.. print it on one 4x6 or use paint/whatever to make 4 of them (not 6.. since more 4x6 are actually 4x5.7) and print 4 of them once for 20-30-40 cents..
Another advantage.. you control your own photos.. the morons at the local store took a passport photo that was rejected with the passport application.
Just went to CVS to have passport pics taken and the nice photo guy shared a tip to get them printed for about $3.50 instead of $18+: -Sign up for ExtraCare subscription (Free for 1st month and $5/month after) -Joining gives you $10 off purchase -Print that receipt -Use coupons printed on that receipt to combine with your $10 off purchase -You can cancel within a month to avoid paying the $5. He even wrote the number on the receipt *He pointed out it’s ridiculous these pics are normally like 15 cents but because they’re passport it’s an up charge. He spent about 3 minutes of his time with me and was with a little lady before I got there and after I left to help her print her 15 cents photos.
Bonus: They’re guaranteed to be accepted!
CVS or Walgreens charges $16 for printing passport photos. If you have the digital photo, instead you can save money by using an app on your phone to create a 3x3 collage and print on a regular 4x6 for $0.89.
Edit 1: As some people suggested, there are plenty of apps that help you meet the requirements. I've been doing this for many years without any issues.
Is there any cheaper way to get passport photos. I dont want to pay $15 to cvs , walgreens. I dont want to print using my phone as its mentioned on website that no cropping or dont use any software to change background color.
I’ve seen apps and some websites that can covert it for you and you can print it out yourself. Thinking of this as an option because I have a big family that needs renewing and it could save us a bit of $$$ if we just needed to print the pictures instead. Should I just chalk it up and get them done or is this a legit option?
I need to print a 2x2 passport picture for an IDP international driver's permi. Do I need photo paper to do this or can I use traditional paper? Thanks for all the help!
I'm ready to handle my own passport photos (for my friends). Will get special photo paper to use for printing. But I can't find out if a special **printer** is needed.
Anyone know?! Please advise : )
Just curious if anyone can recommend one. Bad experiences with any? Problems with pictures being rejected?
Thanks!
I took a picture w my phone against a white background. From there I uploaded to Walgreens as a collage and chose 4x4. Doing this, I was able to print 4 2x2 pictures that Walgreens printed. They did this for $.49. They normally charge $18 for a passport pic. Be sure to take the pic on your phone as ‘square’ and then you can get it to the right size and proportion.
Redditors keep saying you can print your own photo and then print it at the pharmacy for cheap but this is TERRIBLE ADVICE.
this doesn't work unless your photo is high def. Recently discovered that they compress your image if you go this route. Wasted way too much time trying to troubleshoot only to discover that when I printed the same image with the kiosk passport software as opposed to the 4x6 or 5x7, the resolution got 100x better. IT'S THE EXACT SAME PHOTO! They're running a scam to upcharge you the same product.
Passport photos are grossly overpriced. If you have access to a white wall, good lighting, and a good friend, you can take your own passport photo.
This site puts your password photo on a standard 4" x 6" picture that you can get printed at your drug store, for a FRACTION of the cost of what it costs to get them done at the store. Just make sure you select the "Do it yourself" link at the bottom. Getting one picture printed usually costs less than a $1 at most stores.
I had a friend use my 3G iPhone in front of a projector screen. Sent it in to the State Department and was accepted.
Just make sure it meets all the requirements:
http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/passports/photos/photos.html
Also, although it doesn't specifically say so on that list, if you regularly wear glasses, you'll need to take them off for the photo.
The State Department even offers a tool for using your own photo:

Walgreens does this. Every time my father orders passport prints, they send a passive aggressive coupon advertising their passport photo printing which is ridiculously overpriced for a single photo whereas my dad manages to get 6 on a 4x6 photo.
Walgreens and CVS charge $18 which is ridiculous for such a small picture. I have the pic on the phone, how can I print it for cheap?? It’s for Florida so Miami department.
Hello, friends!
I’m a volunteer at a foundation, and we’re planning to help our clients by providing passport-sized photos free of charge. We’ll be printing the photos ourselves and want to ensure they meet quality standards.
Could you recommend a reliable printer (brand and type) that’s suitable for this task? We’re looking for something that can handle high-quality photo printing efficiently. Any advice on paper or ink types would also be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your help!
I have a digital photo that meets the photo requirements (white background, correct head placement, etc). I'm wondering if it would be sufficient to get the photo printed 6-at-a-time on a 4x6 print at Walmart, or if the resolution/quality wouldn't be good enough. I know it has to be 300dpi but can't find info on what resolution Walmart uses for 4x6 prints.
If not, any suggestions for places that would produce a photo with acceptable quality? (CVS? Staples?)
