They're no frills but solidly constructed. It's a buy once, cry once bag With the TNF bags I like the Voyager line better than the Base Camp. I think the squarer shape is better for many use cases. depends on what you mean by backpacking I can confidently say these duffels are duffels with backpack straps, definitely not a true backpack. If you will be doing a lot of walking then you want a more purpose built backpack (hip belt, better back padding, more comfortable straps, less awkward shape, water bottle holder etc.). But train station/airport to hostel or hotel? perfect for that. More on reddit.com

Yes cubes and a Thule Gauntlet case. But what a duffle bag? A 40 liter backpack will carry so much better. Note that Patagonia changed the dimensions on the Bksck Hole 40 to 19.7" x 12.5" x 8.5". I question if it is actually 40 liters. More on reddit.com

I have: 2 x Patagonia Black Hole 40L duffels Patagonia Black Hole 55L duffel Gregory Alpaca 40L duffel Gregory Alpaca 60L duffel All have lifetime guarantees The last three are recent purchases, but I love the two Black Hole 40s. I wanted a larger version of the Black Hole for trips where I’m driving. So I picked up the Black Hole 55L. I was in a local outfitter this weekend who has having a large Christmas sale, and the Gregory duffels were on sale at a good price. I wanted to get my son a duffel for his ski gear, to be used when he’s driving somewhere to ski, so I picked up the two Gregory duffels. I’ve had really good experience with Gregory packs, and similar to Black Hole duffels, the Gregory duffels came with the attached luggage handles, detachable backpack straps, and you can use just one of them for over the shoulder carry. The Gregory duffel also has an extra end pocket that expands into the main space that could be used for dirty or wet gear if needed. Both have a slightly padded base. The Black Hole bags store inside one of the bag’s zipper pockets, while the Gregory duffels come with a free packing cube for bag storage and use when the bag is not being stored. Both have the exterior webbing daisy chains for external gear attachment. The Gregory 60L has two inside zippered mesh pockets on the lid, while the Black Hole 55L has one. The Gregory duffels are about 10-11 oz heavier than the Black Hole equivalent if that matters to you (it didn’t to me as they are for use when driving somewhere). Both have the large U shaped zippered opening making it east to get gear in and out.

I found this second hand for a great price, so if I don’t use it I could always resell it. But it seems like it would be great, for how it opens up on the back to full access, tons of pockets inside and on the side, detachable shoulder straps, hanging loops and a durable water resistant fabric. 40 liters for winter travel through 5-6 cities in Europe seems small though.

I’ve used it for multi-week travel. After 10 days it’s all the same to me. The bag is great in terms of durability and quality, but I have to say I’m not a fan of how they configured the backpack straps. It’s not that comfortable to wear for extended periods and the handles aren’t removable and tget in the way. I prefer it as a duffle. But will shoulder it for short periods. The REI big haul is a bit of a knock off, but more thoughtfully designed. I think Cotopaxi’s Allpa 42 is one of the best IMO, but you’ve got to like their color schemes. Also, we sell a lot of Ospreys Fairview/Farpoint 45L at our store, which has the best strap system around with an adjustable torso and hipbelt. Ideal if you’re going to have it on your back for extended periods. You can’t go wrong with Patty, but the bag really is more of a duffle than a backpack. They could have knocked it outside of the park with some organizational features, synch straps, and better strap configuration.
