I have both - the down sweater will be much warmer, the nano puff will breath better for being active. I’d make the decision based on your climate. If you have real cold winter weather or run a bit cool, I wouldn’t expect the Nano Puff to keep you warm enough without a cold weather specific layering system under it and even then, you might want more warmth. If you want more versatility in the clothes you wear under it and need to stay warmer in cold weather, I’d go with the down sweater. I view my nano as more of a fall/spring layer for my climate. Edit: don’t pick the nano puff for breathability. The difference between the down sweater and nano puff is probably negligible in that category. Answer from guyonacouch on reddit.com

Use case for Ultralight Down Hoody? - Backpacking Light
Rab Continuum, 5oz 850 fill, 12.5oz men’s L (i am M in most US brands, incl. Patagonia). previous jacket was untreated down, and while still super useful, the hydrophobic stuff (at least from Rab) is fantastic, especially in the PNW. ... Thanks Jared. Noteworthy (to me at least) that you’re using a jacket w/ 5 oz fill, a little warmer than the UL hoody... More on backpackinglight.com

In reply: I've got the non-hood version of the Patagonia in striking gecko green. I utterly love it. Bought mainly for alpine bivvying, but it's so snug it gets used elsewhere (high st, crag, etc.). Coating of babe magnetite is thicker on this one than other Patagucci garments. But I probably wouldn't use it on frosty grit bouldering days, and would opt for dressing up as a blimp in a big bulky traditional duvet jacket ... More on ukclimbing.com

Patagonia Down Sweater Hooded Jacket - Men's - Clothing
Perhaps the Down Sweater jacket I received was just a one-ff, but I have noticed other reviews mentioning the same issue. I will still consider Patagonia gear in the future, but I'll likely stick with RAB for any down products. I'll leave a review of that coat once I've used it for a bit. ... This jacket is super light and super warm. It also repels light amount of moisture and rain. A few annoying things about it, though. 1.) the hood can't be removed or put on when the jacket is fully zipped...its too tight to squeeze on or off without zipping your jacket down a bit 2.) this thing sheds feathers like no other down jacket i've owned.

In reply to TonyM: I too have the non-hooded version in black. Brilliant jacket, uber-light weight, has been very useful for taking abroad as it takes up so little space when compressed. The downside for me is that it is showing signs of wear on the outer fabric - small holes where down is escaping. I can patch them up ok, but washing in a machine is now not really possible without the whole garment disolving! I don't think Patagonia would repair free of charge as this is just normal wear and tear, although just a bit too premature for my liking.

r/PatagoniaClothing on Reddit: Down Sweater Hoody as winter jacket for casual - urban use in 'central' Europe climate.
November 16, 2022 -

Hello,

I'm on a search for a good winter jacket that will handle European winter. I need something that will keep me warm in temperatures ranging from -5( 23°F ) to 5 degrees Celsius, with extremes being around -10 ( 14°F )(although rather rare). As it is a casual/everyday jacket, I'd be wearing it with sweaters or sweatshirts underneath, and it will probably be used mostly in static/low activity scenarios, like walking around the town, waiting for bus and such. I tend to run a bit cold, but I'm rather comfortable in Arc'teryx Atom LT in around 5 deg Celsius with something light underneath when static.

I'm considering buying the Down Sweater Hoody because of how light and comfortable it is. The high density down should keep me warm in those situations (I am aware that rain might be an issue). I also like the warm hood of that jacket.

Have a good day!
