They've had a few tears but sent them in and repaired within a month or so (I get any repairs sent off in summer when Im not using them) if you're handy with a needle and thread, any tears can be temporarily held until you can get a proper repair done. One thing to watch out for, the buckle clips can get damaged when washing, so try and tie the straps up so they're inside the overalls when being washed, or put the overalls in a large delicates bag. Quick dry is more important than waterproof for your main pants. Hiking in waterproof pants usually means getting wet anyway from sweat. Bring separate goretex or otherwise waterproof pants that can go over for torrential rain (or extra warmth at camp), ideally full zip so you don't have to take your boots off. More on reddit.com

So, I’m about to be a field forester and that means I need some durable, looser, and storage heavy clothes.
Couple young foresters I’ve talked to had told me they had been disappointed in their Carhartt’s as they felt the quality has gone done since becoming more mainstream. I can’t speak to that, but it does shy me away.
Enter the hemp workwear line Patagonia came out with, I was immediately interested. Especially in the overalls for the storage and security (plus warmth in the winter, snow down your pants is NOT fun).
Can anybody attest to these things holding up to some serious work outside in swamps, logging yards, etc? Just places where other clothes get torn up in under a year.

I’ll be doing the W trek and other treks around Patagonia end of March and early April. I have good hiking pants from Kathmandu but they aren’t waterproof and I’m worried about them getting wet when I do the W trek in April. Are goretex/waterproof pants essential? What are your recommendations?
