I just bought a house and I would like to buy some lawn equipment and patio furniture. Does anyone know when some of the big box stores begin to put their lawn and garden items on clearance?

okay, so I'm about to launch a bunch of info at you about lawn equipment. bear with me; I'll try to organize it the best I can! if frugality is your main goal, skip the big box stores. you'll be replacing the equipment/buying parts so frequently (if you can find somewhere to buy parts, that is--lots of cheap stuff are sold as throwaway units, despite being $60-$120) that you'll go well over the cost of something nice that will last you for years. it's all about saving in the long run, and believe me, going with a quality brand WILL save you money because the cheap ones WILL break down in a short period of time. It doesn't matter how much you baby them. they're crap, plain and simple. they're meant to break down so you keep buying them. I would recommend going to a local dealer in Echo equipment. Home Depot just started selling this brand, but you will not find the same customer service there that you'll get with a dedicated dealer, and the prices are the same even when you go to a little guy (Echo regulates the costs). They are commercial-grade machines at great prices, and they have the longest warranty in the industry. They will probably never go on sale because the demand stays the same year-round (commercial lawn folks love this brand because it easily keeps up with other big commercial names for half the price), but you will save a ton in the long run. Let me give you an example: an Echo trimmer (weed eater) is $230. It has a 5-year warranty, and they easily last 15, if taken care of (wash/change the air filter, fuel stabilizer over winter, change out the bump-head when worn). A Ryobi/homelite/troy-bilt trimmer is $50-$150. You'll be lucky if you get 2 years out of it. Let's say some minor damage happens to the air filter cover and you have to get a new one. You search for a Homelite dealer in your area, but wait--there aren't any (box stores carry the most basic/generic of parts and you will not get help there for anything more serious than trimmer line or an air filter). You go online, and discover that the model has been discontinued. Now you're screwed and have to buy a new one. $150x2=$300. God help you if you bought one with a bazillion attachments that are now useless. Meanwhile, your neighbor purchased an Echo for $230 8 years ago and he discovers an issue with his air filter cover. He writes down his model and serial numbers and goes down to the local dealership, where they have it in stock and he's out the door in 10 minutes. A solid example of proof of quality is the rating these various brands are given. The EPA requires companies to disclose how long a piece of equipment can go before it requires regular maintenance. A big-box brand is rated 50 hours. Brands like Echo/Redmax/Kawasaki/Stihl (for the latter 3, only their commercial equipment, NOT homeowner lines) are 300 hours. Also, the maintenance on an Echo is sooo easy. You can fix one all by yourself, with no previous knowledge. It's set up to be easy and fast. One example is the starter (where the rope is contained). If you look at a quality brand, the starter is usually on the outside of the engine, easily accessible and 4 screws hold it on. If you can't fix it yourself, you can unscrew it and take the palm-sized starter to a shop, where they'll fix it for under $20. A big-box brand will have the starter between the engine and the metal shaft. That means the engine has to be nearly disassembled to get to it, and many repair centers will tell you to go buy a new one because labor costs are going to be too expensive. Source: My parents are dealers of this brand and 4 others (Kawasaki, Stihl, Redmax, Shindawa), and I pretty much grew up working at their business. I know the ins and outs of these machines and there is seriously no better deal than this brand. Of all the brands they've carried over their 21 years, Echo has consistently been the highest selling and highest rated from homeowners and commercial businesses alike. In terms of mowers: push/self-propelled mowers are all about the same when it comes to homeowner lines. Stay away from Tecumseh engines. Briggs and Stratton is going to be easiest to get parts for, and the cheapest. Honda is the most well-built, but parts are expensive as hell. Troy-Bilt/Cub Cadet/MTD/Huskee and many others are all made by the same company, so don't get too hung up on the brand name of the mower itself. Engine brand is the most important. (Important note: you'll see commercial people with the brand name "Toro." This is a great COMMERCIAL brand. The homeowner pieces are NOT. They're not even made by Toro! They contracted a cheap, overseas brand to make them and then slapped the Toro decal on them.) I recommend going to Lowes for push/sp mowers because they contract with local repair centers (when available) to get warranty work done, rather than shipping it off for months. If you're going for a ZTR (zero-turn radius) mower, it's going to be a situation like the Echo trimmer example above. Lots of crap out there that seems really affordable, but the parts and labor nightmare will be endless and expensive. We're talking hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars in repairs in a matter of months, and you bought the thing for only $2000. Look for Scag (my first choice), Hustler, or Toro. If you have a chance to look it over/get a second opinion from a repair center, buying used is a really excellent option. It's like buying a car with the ZTR's--if maintained well, they can go through multiple owners and last forever. If you have any other questions, let me know!

Have you recently bought your home ?How much time do you spend or entertain outside? I bought a place in a destination town in So. Cal. Spare bedrooms, pool and spa. Of course friends and family are going to be visiting. Before finishing the house interior, of course I furnished outside. Decorative lights, glass candle holder things, landscape lighting, pool floats, loungers, dining table and chairs. Side tables. 10 years later of cushions on, cushions off, never a cushion on when we do go out, sun bleaching cushions and umbrellas, most of it has gone unused. I think I’ve used the dining table possibly twice. Dust on everything.
