Update: I've installed anti-malware software (Hitman Pro) and made 2 scans using Windows Defender. I called PayPal's fraud department and they had someone take a look at those transactions tied to my now cancelled credit card and they agreed that these transactions were clearly fraudulent and unauthorised. They told me PayPal was going to refund the full amounts and sent me an email to confirm this as well as another email saying that they received my appeal and updated the case accordingly. I should be refunded within 5 business days but I'm holding my breath until then. In the meantime, 2FA and documenting all my emails from PayPal. Thank you for the responses. Update update: So I still haven't been able to log back into my PayPal account because PayPal won't allow me to reset my password without answering the changed security questions and I've spent the better half of the last 6 hours calling customer service to work things out. Long story short, a freeze has been placed on my account and cannot be undone until I submit a copy of government issued photo ID with my name on it but I won't be able to even attempt to reset my password until the account is done refreshing in 48 hours. The service reps assured me that even though the hacker has access to my PayPal account they cannot request a reversal on the refunds that PayPal has issued. We've concluded that the hacker may have remotely accessed the account using malware and I have already performed multiple scans using malware removal software. None of my other accounts have been compromised, most importantly the sign-in activity log on my email shows that the hacker has not been able to sign into my email since. I'm going to format my computer just in case before I proceed with calling PayPal again to try and reset my password two days from now. It seems like I've really lucked out here. I created my PayPal account about 7 years ago and I haven't updated my profile in like 5 years so most of my personal information is outdated. The only things I linked to it were my credit card which I have now cancelled and an old student banking account that has had virtually $0 in it for years. I removed both of these from my PayPal account when I temporarily had control of the account again last night. Unless I've overlooked something, my PayPal account should be pretty useless to this hacker now so I don't understand why they persist in keeping the account out of my control.
