Creating a paypal business account, is it worth it or too risky for staying anonymous?
I used to use a personal PayPal account when I first offered commissions, however my following was pretty small at the time. As my audience grew, I opted to make a business account to protect my identity bc while the majority of the internet interactions I’ve had are great, there’s definitely some sketchy people I’m glad don’t have access to my real name. That being said, the only burden I’ve had with a business account are two things. One is in regards to the new tax law that took place this year in the U.S where if you make over $600 a year, you will be sent tax forms and you will be taxed on it. And PayPal doesn’t take out tax for you, so you have to track it on your own and pay what you owe come tax season. However, this is ONLY applicable to business accounts (which is why I will use my personal account with friends I trust that way it won’t be taxed, however on their end they will be charged an additional transaction fee, which sucks). And two, unless you’re making a “friends and family” transaction (which I believe is only possible via a private account), PayPals fees are ridiculous. And again, their fees are NOT them taking out an included tax. It’s just the fee for using their site, period. For me it’s been anywhere from 3-6 dollars, which doesn’t sound like a lot but it adds up per commission! So that’s super frustrating and honestly I’m trying to find a better route for payment but as of now I’ve just had to deal with it. It really just comes down to what you prioritize, avoiding fees or your identity! More on reddit.com

Business account as a private person
Well hopefully you did not use a fake name other wise you just donated to the Paypal Xmas Party fund. You can be a business and sole proprietor - you must use your own name. You chose a business name, then you need to provide the business registration and documents - If you don’t have you can always Call CS and claim ignorance - but if you also used a fake name - it’s gone… Paypal is not something where you can be anonymous. r/paypal on Reddit: Creating a PayPal business account without having a business
October 26, 2023 -

I live in Australia and have been wanting to set up a PayPal account so that I can set up art commissions and get a little bit of money that way.

My understanding of the personal PayPal account type (which is what I currently have, as my mother said I wasn't eligible for a business account) is that receiving money is a bit more tricky. My mother (she's probably going to feature heavily in this post, I'm afraid) said that I would have to get people to tick the "from a friend or family member" box when receiving payments, although as I understand it that's 1: against PayPal's rules and 2: makes it so that the customer can't get their money back via chargeback.

The reason my mother said I wasn't eligible for a business account is because, legally, I do not have a business, and it wouldn't be something I could maintain as I would not be doing a high number of commissions. Do I actually have to be running a business to set up a business PayPal account? I've had a bit of a look around and it seems like I don't but I wanted to double check.

Thank you!

Some of us sometimes make some weird art. Some of that art is the type of stuff that pays the bills but we definitely don't want our full names behind. Nothing fucked up but just something cringeworthy or very weird that someone is willing to pay high amounts of money for. I asked other places about this idea and I was met with hostility, including people thinking I'm a drug dealer for some reason. But I'm wanting to ask, for those who did create a business account for paypal were there any problems you ran into that just make it more of a hassle then going through with it?

Honestly I'm wondering the same thing. I'm just starting out but I know eventually I may end up making some questionable works to, if not live off of, at least stretch my paychecks. I know I can always make another screen name/account for such works, but as far as bank stuff goes I dont know how I'd navigate that without outing myself...
