The motherboard is the main circuit board of a desktop computer. It connects all components together. Additionally, it provides power connections, data pathways, and ports for external devices, enabling communication between all hardware components. Essentially, it ensures that everything works together. Edit: I choose a board based on it's ability to service the components (GPU, CPU, storage, RAM) that do and store the work. You can probably get away with a <$300 board if the cheaper variants can support your other components and/or has the ports that you need. Answer from Daykeem on reddit.com

Best Motherboard?

Go with B350 and save $100. The only difference between B350 and X370 is B350 doesn't support SLI/Crossfire.

Any of the models on the market should be fine except ASRock. Their Ryzen boards have been plagued with tons of issues.

I have the Gigabyte Gaming 3 myself.

Do I need a good motherboard for gaming?
There is no difference at all between motherboards when it comes to gaming. The only benefit more expensive motherboards have is certain features like crossfire, more slots, and better cooling for overclocking. In terms of gaming, and CPU compatibility, there is 0 difference. More on reddit.com

I’m starting to buy the parts for my new build, and I’m curious what a mobo actually does, as it’s something I’ve never put much thought into, and I don’t know whether or not to shell out good money for one. Processor and GPU I understand just fine, and plan on buying according to my needs + some future proofing but…if I’m gaming, do I need a $300, top of the line mobo? Or will I not notice too much of a difference with a more generic one?

Edit: thanks everyone for the answers! Lots of good information in here.

Motherboard is basically just the necessary hardware to interconnect everything in your system. Almost all mainboard feature basic stuff such as on-board soundcard and ethernet (and some Wifi). You can basically choose any motherboard, which is compatible with your chosen CPU (and RAM) and it will work just fine. The most important aspect of a motherboard is the used chipset. Just look up the differences between the chipset within a given CPU socket (AMDs AM5 for example has 3 different chipsets available). More expensive ones have more features but they (generally) do not offer any performance benefit. My rule of thumb: Dont pick the cheapest and never the most expensive. Just pick something in the middle. As an example: For AMD AM5 i think a cheap B650 mainboard at around $100-150 is sufficient. Just make sure the maindboard can fit all your hardware (SSDs, HDDs, external soundcard, capturecard...)
