Is there a way to summarize a 38 page PDF with Chat GPT all at once
Here’s a script that will chunk a large text and run each one through the API. That can give you summaries of each large chunk. You could run that through again if you wanted a more condensed summary. I’m not sure if you can input a PDF though. https://github.com/jckpn/RecursiveGPT The “chat your pdf” options will not work for summarization. They look for answers in your document, but it’s a search and will not do an overall summary. More on reddit.com

Best way to summarize a PDF?
If you’re a Plus subscriber, you don’t need the PDF plug-in anymore. There’s a little + icon to the left of the prompt input field where you can upload PDFs directly to ChatGPT4 Plus. Once it has the PDF, just ask for what you want. “Summarize this” -simple as that. Now, you should be aware that the bigger the PDF, the more likely GPT is gonna choke on it and error out trying to build its response. You’ll probably have the best results splitting the PDF into the smallest logical unit that makes sense for the textbook. If these chapters are up to 60 pages long, that’s probably more than the server load can handle right now, so I’d suggest you split the chapter into smaller subsection PDFs. So hypothetically, if you had a 10 chapter, 600 pg PDF textbook, you might end up splitting that into, say, 120 5 pg PDFs. (I’m just using easy numbers, in reality, the quantity and length of the sub-PDFs should be determined by the chapter’s subsections.) At that point just upload the 1st PDF and ask for a summary. If you’d like the summary to be formatted a certain way or to use a certain tone (casual, academic, Snoop Dogg- whatever you want), state that as well along with any other guidance you might want to provide. I find it’s best to do the 1st PDF summary and see if you like the output. If there’s something you’d prefer was different, add your feedback to the previous prompt you used and generate a new summary. Once you’re satisfied with the quality of the 1st summary, copy it and paste it into a separate notepad file. Now upload the 2nd PDF and just paste the same prompt you used for the 1st one and copy-paste that output into the notepad file. Repeat that until you’re done. Now, if you’d like, you can copy-paste that ENTIRE summary that went subsection by subsection (it’s probably a pretty long summary) back into ChatGPT and, you guessed it, paste the same prompt as before. Now you’ll have a summary of the subsection summaries. You could also use different directives for summarizing the long-summary like “give me a 2000 word summary of this” Here’s the thing that most people don’t seem to get- using the tool properly takes effort and experimentation. How did I come up with that sequence of steps to successfully summarize a 600pg PDF? I wrestled with one myself until I figured out the most effective way to get the results I wanted. I find most people will try to give it the 600 pg PDF, type “summarize this” and when ChatGPT errors out, they throw up their hands and walk away, secure in their opinion that ChatGPT is ‘shit.’ Other folks will say, “ok, how can I make this work” and start experimenting. These are the power users. More on reddit.com

You can ask Bing chat, in a sidebar in the Edge browser, to summarize the pdf open in the main window. It does a good job, and you can ask follow up questions about it. I use Linux, and found it was worth installing Edge just for the AI. More on reddit.com

There is a plugin, two actually, that will read an uploaded PDF. If you have the ChatGPT Pro account, go to settings and allow plugins. (Might not be available for everyone) Then start a new chat, click GPT-4 option. There should be a drop-down allowing plugins. Go to plugin store from there. Look in popular and there's 2pdf readers to choose from. Add one and ask for how to use it
