I wanted y’all’s thoughts as this is something I’ve been concerned about for years. I have an iPhone. I have found Pela’s cases to not last very long and I have to get a new one in at most a year, but have had ones last much less. They’re expensive, but I worry because at least they’ll break down vs. a plastic one adding to the mountains of trash. Which is more sustainable? Because there’s also the shipping and production. I think I’ve gone through three cases as they all rip or come apart.

Just curious, what's happening to your Pela cases? I've had two--one for each of the two phones I've gone through in the past 5 years. I've never had any issues at all. I often recommend them to people.

I’ve heard some say it’s greenwashing, but only in vague terms. And I’m wondering if the cases really are compostable??
If it’s no good, is there a better alternative?

I got them and have found the quality quite poor. Would not recommend. To me low quality products aren’t sustainable even if the case is ultimately compostable, as you have to replace it more often which uses more energy, likely generates more manufacturing waste, and requires more energy for shipping.

Hey! Im not an expert, but I actually live in Kelowna, where Pela is based. The cases are made out of flax and if you're buying JUST a phone case, they're actually made in Kelowna, not overseas and shipped around. The Balsam (outdoor) school here actually tours the facility as a field trip. The same can not be said for the Pela accessories, many of which are made in China. The phones are able to bio degrade in a home composter (or in theory just shoved in your garden, but I'm sure that depends on your climate, it's dry here). I personally don't have a case because my phone model isn't supported by them, however my partner has had a few and they haven't had any issue. I'd say if you're prone to dropping your phone, get a different case, but if you're not too clumsy, these are a fine option, especially if you want to avoid transportation waste (if you live in NA).
