“Pendleton Indian Partnerships”?
How does Pendleton Woolen Mills fit into the appropriation conversation?
a question about Pendleton from an outsider
We're all kinda 50/50 on 'em. They use designs on blankets from Native artists, but they're not Native owned, and I knew some people that would go to the mill for odds and ends, scraps, but could seldom get them, because some white woman was showing up even earlier, buying up everything, jacking the price and then selling to Natives.
I think it's one of those things that, since they use some artists' works, we just sort keep quiet about the rest of it. Not happy about it, but, it's how it seems to be.
Plenty of other Natives you can support, like 49design.com, or many artists on Twitter who sew, bead, etc. Yellowtail is another designer, as well.
TIL that many Native American patterns we see today were actually derived from a 19th Century collaboration…
The more interesting thing from the article is that the "native patterns" were inspired by the Spanish. It's interesting how much of Native American culture we consider "traditional" but only came about after contact with the west.
More on reddit.comI’m looking at these blankets from Pendleton Woolens. I know they aren’t native owned, but they have all this copy about meaningful partnerships with native peoples, and that the designs were co-created with native artists and craftspeople.
This is bullshit, right? My instinct is that this is marketing speak for “we want to sell blankets with appropriated native designs but we would really like to not be criticized about it”, but I don’t really know. They do name a few more specific relationships with specific tribes and bands, and it’d be cool if it was legit.
Y’all have any insight?
