I get the idea of natural fibers and that percale is more durable because of the weave, but why is that the only cotton people ever recommend? Am I missing something? Whatever happened to like Egyptian cotton?

You’re talking about 2 different things. Percale is the weave process and Egyptian cotton is the raw material. Since summer is around the corner, percale is going to be popular because of the breathability of the fabric. Percale is a cross-stitch 1 over 1 and the other popular weave is sateen (heavier and warmer) which is a 3 over 1 weave.
What is better, 300tc Percale or 800tc Long Staple Egyptian Cotton?
Percale is a weave style, while long staple Egyptian cotton is a fabric type. Percale sheets are often made of long staple Egyptian cotton. Thread count is often just marketing talk imo. It doesn’t necessarily say anything about the actual feel or quality of the sheets. More on reddit.com
