I am planning on planting some perennials in the small strip of dirt/mulch next to our driveway (between the lawn and the driveway). I was thinking about planting one perennial between each pair of rocks. Ideally something that doesn’t grow too tall and adds some color. Would you have any recommendations on what would work? We have a 3ft wide strip of dirt between our driveway and the fence. The stairs on the right are my neighbor’s and go up to a landing where they like to hang out. I’d like recommendations for a tall skinny tree or shrub, native if possible, that would give us both a little privacy and block some of the afternoon sun on the driveway. I’ve considered bamboo but am worried about it spreading. Thanks for reading!

Some of these might be better fits than others, but here is the general list of native shrubs that I give out to people so you have plenty of options to consider. Some would need more pruning than others, personal favorites would be mock orange, tall oregon grape, California bay laurel, Douglas spirea, osoberry, red flowering currant. If you want something for privacy sooner, consider planting both a shrub and a vine, and install a trellis for the vine to climb a lot faster than a shrub can grow.
