Tropicals are generally not frost tolerant. They’ll die the first time your temps drop below 32 degrees. We are in 8b and have some bananas that regrow each year after freezing back, but it’s rare they have enough time to bloom and produce fruit before it freezes again the next winter. You could try some dwarf varieties and keep them in pots that can move indoors (or a greenhouse) over the winter. But they still need a lot of light. Answer from Fantastic-Sky6111 on reddit.com

Tropical Plants for a Cold Climate Garden - Here She Grows
November 5, 2024 - The gigantic leaves of the colocasia juxtaposed with the delicate looking foliage and white flowers of Sweet Autumn clematis (there’s absolutely nothing delicate about this plant) does it for me. Pictures are great for showing you where something’s lacking and I think a Stained Glass hosta beneath the one on the left will really make those dark leaves pop. Good thing I already have that hosta (on far right) and have added it to the list of things to be divided in the spring. On that note, hosta, while perennial here, also lends tropical flair with it’s big leaves.

r/pnwgardening on Reddit: Favorite fast growing tropical/jungley looking plants?
January 12, 2025 -

Seeking your favorite lush, tropical looking plants for the Seattle area! Preference for hardy, affordable, and fast growing.

I'm renting a property with a backyard that has great soil as it was previously a well used garden space, but has been neglected for a long time and is pretty empty and sad to look at right now. I love the look of oversized leaves, reds and yellows mixed with green, vines, and colorful flowers. So far I'm looking at elephant ears, hardy banana trees, and passionflower, and encouraging/propagating the existing spotted laurel, yucca, and bamboo.

While I know I'm limited for actual tropical plants, what are some plants that give a jungley vibe that like our climate? Bonus thanks if you have tips that have helped your tropical-esque plants thrive!
