[Hated Trope] The entire character is just an impression of Peter Lorre
What I find particularly odd about this trope is that these Lorre characters are often "Igor" type characters even though the real Lorre didn't really play roles like that. He did play villains and was in horror films (he was even a mad doctor a few times) but the specific Igor archetype was never a character played by Lorre. More on reddit.com

Can someone explain to me why Peter Lorre was so influential in animation?
He was a big star during the Golden Age of Animation, and was a person who was very easy to caricature and do impressions of at the time due to his memorably unique look and voice. As a result tons of Golden Age cartoons have caricatures of him and have characters doing impressions of him. He's not the only one -- there were tons of similar caricatures/impressions of contemporary celebrities too -- but there were SO many of Peter Lorre that it transcended him and turned into a character archetype by itself. This is why impressions of him have lingered for so long and you have animators who grew up well after Lorre passed still creating characters based on him. More on reddit.com

'M' (1931), the first sound film from 'Metropolis' director Fritz Lang, has one of the best examples of sound motif shown on film, where the serial killer, played by Peter Lorre, whistles "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" before committing his murders.

I think "M" should be mandatory viewing in every psychology classes.

  1. Dr. Lorre (Looney Tunes)

  2. Slappy Laszlo (SpongeBob SquarePants)

  3. Edgar E. Gore (Frankenweenie)

  4. N. Gin (Crash Bandicoot)

  5. Chameleon (TUFF Puppy)

  6. The Maggot (Corpse Bride)

  7. Hanging Lamp (Brave Little Toaster)

  8. King of Flan (Courage the Cowardly Dog)

To be a touch more specific, what I dislike most about a lot of these characters is they feel less like a homage and more borderline mocking him based on his appearance. I understand Lorre has a very noteworthy appearance, but the way a lot of depictions in various media focus on his face, his bulging eyes, and his raspy voice feels like they’re making fun of him. I’m not a big fan of this given if you know anything about Lorre’s history, he’s a lot more than a funny face, and his story is really great.
