All weird spellings are the result of us pronouncing things differently than we used to. 'Phone' is based on the greek 'Phone' meaning 'voice', but the ancient Greeks would have prounounced it like p'ho-nay. We started saying it wrong because we're lazy. Knight, similarly, used to be pronounced like 'k'nig'hit, but that was hard, so we just say 'Knight' now. More on reddit.com

English is a bastard child of many other languages, and we take a lot of words - but hardly all - from Greek or Latin roots including but not limited to the 'phone' suffix that made the word 'telephone'. Latin was also recognized as the language of academia - at least in the Western world - for quite some time and the Latin systems are still popular for the naming of chemicals and illnesses. The pneu- in pneumonia tells anybody familiar with Latin that we're talking about something related to the breath or air for example.
