r/linguistics on Reddit: Is there a phonetic transcription dictionary or tool?
December 27, 2017 -
When I searched 'phonetic transcription online', all the results are phonemic transcription. I wonder if 'phonetic transcription' only exists in linguistics textbooks. I really need a tool which can give me a phonetic transcription of any English and Chinese word so that I may solve some problems which confused me for a long time.
Edit: If there is no such dictionary. How do those writers get the phonetic transcription of words printed in textbooks?
Thanks a lot.

I know about this site . It is far from ideal, but still better than nothing. Answering your second question, if authors are faithful, they find native speakers, record their pronunciations of separate words and then convert them into sequences of IPA symbols. If authors are not so faithful, they open a list of rules for converting orthographic sequences into phones and run an algorithm which gives incorrect results. For some languages faithfully made pronunciation dictionaries do not exist at all, like for Russian.
