Google Photos doesn't use a folder hierarchy. It uses tags that appear as albums, the same way Gmail uses tags that appear as labels/folders. This is not a flaw, but designed this way on purpose for greater flexibility. If you have a folder structure already organized, you can upload each folder via the Google Photos website, and it will give you the option at the bottom of the page after the upload counter, to add those items to an album. This will not upload duplicates, so you can even do it for items already backed up. But yes, there is no way to automatically do this from the app. More on reddit.com

Do you have the option to download said album? If your photos/videos are backed up through Google Photos and not on your internal storage, then it won't appear on the Instagram app when you select to upload a photo/video. The only way around this is to download the photo(s)/video(s) or share them directly from the Google Photos app. More on reddit.com

There is an awful flaw in the way Google Photos backs up photos from my Samsung phone which is driving me crazy.

The app seems to completely ignore all the subfolders in DCIM folder and just back up everything all bundled up together in one big timeline. There is also no functionality to exclude any of the subfolders from backing up and freeing up space (you can include/exclude device folders, but that's another thing).

I had some photos organized into several albums (subfolders in DCIM) and the 'Free up space' thing completelly messed them up (deleted most of the older photos and videos) and since the app did not replicate the album/folder hierarchy on the Google Photos servers, it effectively destroyed all my work and I would need to invest hours and hours to recreate those albums by going through the timeline, searching for specific photos and creating new albums from scratch.

This is just unnaceptable and I can't believe how one of the biggest tech corporations in the world can make such a flawed, messed up app.

I agree with everything you said. I use Google as a live backup but I pray that my phone never dies before I transferred everything to a hard drive (which i do regularly). Completely useless as it puts whatsapp photos and screenshots and actual photos all in one time line. Such a waste of potential.

I am very confused about how Google photos works, alongside the library tab in the Google photos app.

I seem to be able to create an album from Google photos, but I can't find any albums on Instagram when I go to upload pictures to my page. I am only able to find folders that have been created in the library section of the app.

I also can't move photos from "folders" to "albums" or "albums" to "folders".

Am I doing something wrong?

Do you have the option to download said album? The only way around this is to download the photo(s)/video(s) or share them directly from the Google Photos app.

This is an issue with a lot of cloud storage. So Google Photos albums exist as organization in the online cloud service. The folders in the Library tab represent folders on the internal/local storage on your phone. If you want to move stuff in local storage (i.e. a picture that you took on the Pixel you're using or a picture you downloaded) into a specific folder/file directory so you can find it easily on Instagram, you can use the Files app. There, you'll be able to move photos from folder to folder and it'll show up on the folders that Instagram shows you. If the photo only exists on cloud storage (ex. maybe you uploaded the photo to Google Photos from a computer), you'll have to download it or share directly to Instagram from the Photos app like another commenter said.

4 days ago - I want big tech to make my life simpler not more complicated and aggravating. But if space or paying isn’t an issue then 100% recommend 😁 ... I used to recommend to EVERYONE to get and use Google Photos because automatically across all devices you can have ALL your photos in one place and you can free up the massive amount of space they take up on said devices. Plus the little Memories and fun little albums and things they make are cute especially when they do it all for you.

I've got nearly a decade worth of cell phone pics in my Google Photos and am trying to sort them by album so they're more organized. However I notice when I move a photo to an album, it doesn't actually move the photo.... it just has it under the general "photos" section and then also in the album. If I move it and then try to delete it from "photos", it wants to delete it from both photos and the album I have it saved in. Is there a way to remove the photo from the general "photos" section and have it only in the album I'm putting it in??

The important thing to understand albums is that they are NOT folders, they are like labels, so they will still appear on the main Photos section. In fact the same pictures can be in several albums at the same time. Saying that, you could hide from the main page using Archive (in a near future Hidden) and these pictures would still appear in albums and in search results. But honestly, I don't see a reason to archive all of them just to have them only in albums, I prefer having all of them accessible and then use the search bar and albums to find something specific.

I'm the same, I found only selecting a specific number (say 100 photos) album them, and then selecting that exact same 100 and archiving is the only way. I wish it auto-archived but one of googles main features is that endless wall of photos so they probably won't ever add such an option. But this is the only way to ensure you album everything, is archiving it after.
