r/photoshop on Reddit: Just updated Photoshop, what has happened to gradient tool?
November 27, 2023 -
Hi, animation student here, I’m pretty experienced in Photoshop, but I’ve recently updated to Photoshop 2024, and I can’t figure out how to attach my own colours to the gradient tool. When I click the tool, I can only see the default options given. Any clue?

It's a new setup. There should be a dropdown that says "Gradient" and under it "Classic Gradient". You can change to the classic and it will be like the old version. I like the new one because you can edit it more while it's live on the canvas. But I switched back to Classic because it's faster and easier for me with my type of work.

February 12, 2026 - Take care not to Reset All Tools, unless that is intended. Gradient will apply a Gradient Adjustment Layer, with a Widget to edit the gradient. You also see a live preview as you create and edit the gradient. The older Classic Gradient applies a Gradient directly to a layer, without a live preview.

I could write the book how the new one is useless for pros in terms of fast working...
Not rasterized
difficult to move once placed
can't change it's color with hue/sat
Everything is now in small tab window if I want to modify. I've got the feeling that new updates are made by Ai, not human. They also screwed up text tab as well lately so really wondering, if I can just download previous builds since it's impossible I'm gonna be using new ones from now on.

I too was surprised at the change in the gradient tool with v24.5. My googling quickly brought up a youtube video that explained that "Classic gradient" was an option in the options bar. I use the radial gradient a lot, painting on masks primarily, as it creates a more soft edge than even the softest edge brush. I was very happy to see that Classic gradient restored the tool's behaviour to what I was accustomed.

Agreed - the new gradient tool is absolutely unusable in it's current form. Slow, cumbersome and quite frankly useless to my workflow now. It was so handy for small blends and shading and now its takes me 10x the time to attempt the same process. Seriously Adobe, please revert to old gradient - or at least give us the option. I dont PS tools mimicing AI's.

so far the only way to truly use the gradient tool the way it was is to use the older version of the program before this horrible misstep of an "upgrade" · even in classic, it doesn't work on layer masks - it's frustrating - this isn't an upgrade, its a straight up new tool . . . Dear Adobe, stop taking away things that work, and messing up workflow ! if you have a new idea make a new tool, don't mess with that works, or keep the original as a legacy tool ! · worst upgrade ever
