Sorry if this breaks any rules or anything like that. But im getting frustrated and need help. Im trying to make a layer fade to transparent from top to bottom, but for some reason instead of fading to transparent it just fades to black. Any reason that would happen? I have “Transparency” checked off but it’s still doing it.
Any help would be appreciated!

For the Transparency option to work, make sure your gradient is set up with one of the opacity stops being set to 0%. When you click on your gradient, it should look something like this: https://imgur.com/a/SEstDne

I'd need to see the layers to be sure but you may check if your layer isn't the background layer (with the lock) if it is, double click it to make it standard layer without anything below. And i don't know how you set it to fade to nothing but the best method is to add mask to it and make black and white gradient on it.

I'm getting mighty frustrated with this thing.
I have a layer that is a purple colour (I've tried with a completely transparent layer too), I then go to blending options to make it gradient. It needs to go from transparent to the solid purple. The other gradient options seems to work, but when I click "Foreground to transparent" absolutely nothing happens! It stays the same solid purple colour on the entire layer!
I would very much appreciate some help on this problem! Thanks in advance!
Edit: I'm using Photoshop CS6.

try putting the fill to 0% on the layer. below the opacity setting.

As davebees said, you need to set the "Fill" to 0%. A gradient layer style is applied on top of the fill so you would see the original fill color if part of the gradient is transparent (therefor we make the fill transparent so you don't see it).
If all you want is a gradient layer, then do not use the layer style like this. It's slow and clumsy.
Add a Gradient Fill layer instead (you can find it among the adjustment layers by clicking the little black/white circle icon in the layers panel).

Wrong way. It seems you are trying to use Window > Gradients panel. Try to activate Gradient tool as already explained in reply above, then choose gradient from the Options bar and lastly drag gradient on canvas while mask is selected in the Layers panel. You can either use transparent/black or white or black to white gradient.

A problem seen in your video is that the actual Gradient tool is not shown in your Tools panel. I am guessing your Tools panel has been customized, because the Gradient tool appears in the Tools panel in all of the default Photoshop workspaces. So the first thing you want to do is add the Gradient tool back to your Tools panel, and then you will be able to use it. The gradient icon below your Tools panel is not the Gradient tool; as Bojan has noticed, that is the Gradients panel. The reason the Gradients panel doesn’t work on a mask is that as you have seen, it adds a Gradient preset in the form of a new gradient fill layer — the same as if you choose Layer > New Fill Layer > Gradient. However, the Gradient tool is able to create a gradient on a layer mask.

I'm going to add a me too to this thread, because I have had the exact same problem. I got around it by loading Legecy Gradients, and switching to Classic mode... ... but I have not worked out how use transparency in the gradient editor. In fact I am finding it pretty nonintuitive.

Are you using a Gradient Map (Image>Adjustments) or Adjustment layer, which does not have Opacity stops by design?

Hi! Work caught up with me today. Here are the steps. · · 1.Create a new layer on top of your room layers and highlight it as the active layer. · 2. I cannot replicate the issue.If you are using the gradient on a background layer, it will not be transparent. With the Gradient tool active, you could try right clicking on the icon in the Options bar and reset tool.

As already stated by @Chuck Uebele that is what gradient with transparency will do. Area that is transparent will remain transparent, actually Gradient will not paint (not remove color beneath). Gradient is not painting transparency, only colors.

If you're using a partial transparent gradient, that's what it will do: not cover up the section that is transparent in the new gradient. You need to delete the old gradient first. If your gradient didn't have transparency, then it should cover up the old one.
