Partly hype, partly businesses like the idea of being able to save money by having the same language for frontend and backend, because that way you can get someone to do two jobs for one salary. Not only is there no objectively good reason to choose JS over PHP for backend, I would strongly argue the JS tooling and ecosystem for backend is much, much less mature than PHP's and an inferior choice insofar as things which are objectively measurable. Pretty much the only advantage I can think of is the major serverless vendors natively offer runtimes for Node and not PHP. Really refreshing to see all the comments here with practical suggestions, and avoiding all the 'x is better than y'.
I'll add that, working in both Europe and North America, PHP is massive in Europe but seems to be more on a steady decline in NA (at least the cities I've worked; Toronto and SF). In Toronto we used to have a big regular PHP meetup, but attendance has dropped over the last 10 years and has been fully cancelled maybe a year or two ago.

Hype. Nodejs is not worth the change IMHO. I personally went with Go and had no regret. (after a first frustrating year where I almost hated Go) I actually recently joined a very nice team who does PHP, I am happy at work but I miss Go... but not enough to leave the nice team and projects!
