88 piano keys and notes: get to know your keyboard! - Guide2music
January 10, 2021 - To help you see better where the different notes are on the full keyboard, I made the illustration below: “But wait a minute, how do I know which note to play between all the 88 notes?” · Let’s see how now. Since all the notes have the same name, you need a reference to know which one to play. Indeed, if you know that you have to play a C, you also need to know which C to play! ... That’s why there is a reference note on the piano, called the middle C.

Melhart Music Center - Roland GO:PIANO 88-Key Full Size Portable Digital Piano Keyboard
We know that having 88 keys makes a big difference when you're just learning to play the piano. Although smaller 73- or 61-note keyboards are portable and easy to handle for younger players, a full-sized 88-note keyboard helps you develop proper technique and become a better player.

For that budget I don't think you could get a reliable new 88- key digital piano. I've never bought a used digital piano, but most people on this sub recommend looking into the second-hand market, as you may find some Casios, Yamahas, Roland, and other used 88-key fully-weighted digital pianos brands for around $300 (sometimes a little bit more, depending on the level of usage of the digital piano). That being said, I recommend you get a new Casio CT-S1. Which you can get on Amazon for around US $270. Check for all the different offers and stores you can, so you'll get the best deal possible. The CT-S1 features 61 light weighted keys (still they feel a little bit like semi-weighted, I believe) with touch sensitivity, which is crucial for advancing as a beginner. All the other features are cool, but the most important thing is that it has a "recent" sound card which sounds very good for its price. Perhaps it's major disadvantage is that it doesn't feature an LCD panel for the controls (unlike my CT-S300 lmao), you have to check for command combinations on the user guide to change the settings. I know this because I own a Casio CT-S-300, which you could say is an older version of the CT-S1. I got it for $200, and to be honest I couldn't be happier with it (considering its price range). So if you tell me you can get an improved and updated version of the CT-S300, for $270 I'd say go for it. Of course I'd recommend you go to the store and check and play-test any keyboard or digital piano before you buy it. Also always ask for the warranty and the refund policy. It will save you a lot of possible headaches.

Yamaha p45 is $400 new. That's about as cheap as I could recommend an 88 key weighted instrument. What kind of music are they interested in? Nothing wrong with a hobbyist-level 76 or even 61 key instrument with fun sounds to play around with. Manufacturers have to strip everything to the absolute bare minimum functionality to get an 89 key weighted board down to $400. You can get a very fun unweighted hobbyist instrument for $200-$300 that might be more what they would enjoy anyway.

September 28, 2022 - When you learn as a beginner and start to focus on which key is what, you're basically building a map in your mind of which key is what note. With stickers, you're going to have an adjustment period once you remove them to basically make that map happen. Think of your computer keyboard, you've been typing long enough to not look sometimes right?

r/synthesizers on Reddit: Need help finding an 88 key semi-weighted keyboard (that doesn't suck). Or tell me I'm wrong to want this.
July 2, 2024 -

I'm looking for a keyboard. I think I want an 88 key semi-weighted board. This seems like a unicorn. So I turn to you for help in finding such a beast or convincing me it's not really what I want.

I recently bought a novation launchkey 61 as my first keyboard. I will fully admit that I suck and don't yet really know what I'm doing. However I already find that I dislike the feel of the keyboard. It just feels cheap and plasticy.

Why semi-weighted?

I talked myself out of a weighted keyboard after reading on here that it really doesn't work all that well for non-piano things. I think I agree to that and can see the spring back latency being annoying. (And needing the hammer to reset if you don't fully come off the key). I've played around on an Arturia astrolab and I do like the solid feel of the keys. For reference I was a bass guitarist in another life and man I feel like I want some heft in my instrument.

Why 88?

Maybe it's an ego thing but I want to have it all at my disposal as my skill level increases and I've already found the current layout to be annoying when noodling around.

Budget: Under $1k you could maybe convince me all the way up to $2k but I'm gonna feel real dumb if I'm not using this thing in 6 months.

So…

Where the hell are these keyboards? 88 keys seem to almost always be hammer weighted. I see the novation SL MKIII which looks great but is max 61 keys (also can anyone compare it to the astro lab I can't seem to find any place where I could play one). So if I convince myself that 61 is fine perhaps this is a good choice.

I've played the Roland Juno 61 which while unweighted is at least a nice synth pad feel. But the 88 is full hammer action.

I like all the controls and hooks into DAWs that the novation has (at least in theory) but those seem like something I can replace with a stand alone controller. When what I really want is a nice keybed, probably with aftertouch.

Convince me I'm wrong. Tell me to buy an electric piano with a USB out and hook in a controller. Tell me to buy a $10k Moog, grow a huge beard, and start dropping liters of lsd.

Anyway, uh, thanks.

Edit: thanks for all the responses everyone. They've been great and have given me a lot to go on.
