Ripped up basement floor tiles. Didn't know asbestos was a thing until my buddy mentioned it. Looking for advice.
Since this has a vinyl decorative layer, it was manufactured in the 80s at the earliest and with the black base, I would guess more like the 90s. It most likely had 'place and press' type adhesive applied at the manufacturer. The 'bad' adhesive (had asbestos) is black and has trowel marks showing it was applied on site. So the chances are very small that it had asbestos. But it doesn't hurt to test. More on reddit.com

More than likely. The 9x9's were pretty notorious for having asbestos. But not all. More on reddit.com
Help; Asbestos in vinyl flooring confirmed.
I removed an old exhaust fan from a roof in my Grandparents 1960s built home and patched the hole and sanded it back when I was 17. I never really knew about asbestos because I’m somewhat of a dumb ass. Ultimately it comes down to levels of exposure, genetics and the amount of time exposed I believe. Light-short term exposure rarely causes the condition as far as I’m aware. Try not to beat yourself up, there’s a pretty good chance it will never effect you. More on reddit.com

October 21, 2023 -
I just bought this place that was built in 1976 and I just started renovating one of the washrooms. It had some old vinyl flooring that I tore up but there was linoleum under it they just glued over. Considering how old the house is I'm apprehensive to move forward removing it. Would anyone know off hand by looking at these could pictures?
I read somewhere black adhesive underneath tiles could be "Black mastic" which is asphalt-based and most likely contains asbestos, whether or not the tiles do themselves.

one of the key indicators of asbestos containing tile material, in addition to the age, is the size - the 9x9 size generally always contains asbestos as a binder - the good news is that the asbestos in the tiles and in the adhesive mastic are considered 'non-friable' - meaning the fibers are captured in the material and are not immediately available to be airborne, and dangerous the test is for asbestos uses a torch - any of the material sample remaining after being fully burned is examined - the mineral asbestos fibers do not burn there are two methods to handle this - removal or encapsulation - it looks as though 'removal' is your choice - simply be careful to not mechanically sand or cut asbestos containing items, that will make the asbestos fibers friable - the typical method is to keep the area in question wet enough to avoid all dust then scrape or pry-out and remove materials as necessary - check local regulations, but this kind of material can often be disposed of normally (without the triple bag and secure land-fill) personally, I would remove all of that subfloor as well - your thresholds likely will not work with a new plywood subfloor overlay, and any 'fix' will be far more troublesome than it's worth good luck!
