The pinstripe suit is deeply associated with the business world, and with finance and banking in particular. It is said that the stripes in the suit echo the ruled lines in a ledger page. Pinstripe and (more defined) chalk stripe suits are also associated with the mobsters of the 1920s and 1930s . As such, the look can have reverberations of money, power, and sometimes greed or shadiness . When worn outside of business contexts some degree of "I don't care" may be required to achieve the look; and the payoff is a projected image of power that some will respond to very positively. Pinstripes may be seen as part of the alpha male arsenal. Double-breasted, the look will carry even more sartorial weight. The addition of flourishes like bright silky tie, pocket square, cufflinks, colorful socks, power shirt, or flower for the lapel can thrust the monied and sometimes dark implications of the pinstripe suit into a more elegant arena . It's a slick look best worn by those under 30 years of age (though others with a youthful air could make it work). Strictly speaking, there is no such thing as a pinstripe blazer; one would instead call it a sportcoat or odd jacket. Pinstripes are more typically reserved for a full matching suit, so wearing the pattern in an odd jacket may raise a few eyebrows, as it could seem that parts of a matched set are missing. And this, of course, is what the stylists intended — to mix it up and bring a perhaps business-associated pattern into a more vibrant usage. Fashion's embrace of and subsequent reaction against stodgy traditions has produced many interesting takes on the striped suit, including its adoption into the rock and mod vocabularies , especially (but not exclusively) in Britain. I’m someone who has a lot of respect for the rules of formality when it comes to menswear and more and more I begin to lean towards screw it and wear what you like. 99% of people will not know the rules of formality that are discussed on here and will not think it odd if you are wearing a black suit in a formal but not super formal situation. I’m an attorney and I can’t tell you the number of times I see other attorneys wearing loafers to court, among other supposed gaffs. Very few people actually know or care so just keep that in mind. Fashion should be about what you want to express about yourself through your look and if you like the look of a black pinstripe suit then rock it. To your question, yes pinstripes make the suit much more wearable in less formal settings. Be careful because pinstripes can look a little old fashioned and sometimes give mafioso vibes (depending on breast, cut, lapels, etc.) but generally it increases wearability. Colored suits and even shades of grey provide more expression and work with more colors IMO so I tend to lean that direction but I do of course have a black (slightly) textured suit, and you know what, I wear it to court fairly often.
