Hi all,
Would those of you who have used Pirate Ship's Simple Export Rate please share your opinions on it? I've read some of their articles on it in their Support pages, and it seems to be a service that is similar eBay's GSP program, but with some key differences.

Pirate Ship uses Asendia to accept packages, relabel them, and send them on to other countries. From what I can tell, Asendia only relabels them and does not repackage them like eBay does with GSP. A seller also needs to input the info needed by customs and purchase insurance separately. They use Shipsurance for the latter.

It seems great and convenient, but I'd like to get opinions on it from any of you who have used it. So, what have your experiences been with using this service from Pirate Ship and Asendia?

I've only shipped a few packages using it but it seems to work OK. Prices are lower than the Post Office (very lightweight packages probably an exception). Delivery may take a bit longer than the Post Office--but note the international package delivery can be very slow due to Covid anyway. Note Simple Export rate has a 4 pound maximum weight limit.

Hi! I have sent a few packages through Simple Export Rate before, and I should be able to answer most of your questions. Simple Export Rate is usually a different service than USPS FCPI, unless the package is being shipped to Canada. Instead, Pirate Ship works with a company called Asendia to carry the package between countries. Therefore, in the US, the package is shipped via USPS to an Asendia facility, where it stays until they have a decent amount of packages that are going to the destination country. Then, the package travels to the destination country, where the final delivery is made by the local postal service. If I had to guess, your package has made it to the Asendia facility and is waiting for more packages with the same destination to arrive. When I've shipped packages, it's taken around a week between when the package is processed at Asendia and when it actually leaves the country. Let me know if you have any more questions about it!

I recently found out about this and have a few questions if anyone can share.

Does it matter if the tracking doesn’t update UNTIL it reaches the Asendia facility? The AHOY tracking number doesn’t update. I know that I can provide buyers with the domestic tracking going to Asendia but for Etsy purposes, if the tracking doesn’t update for 5 days …
Which leads to ny second question, if the tracking doesn’t update until the facility does it still qualify under Etsy’s seller shipping protection?
And does it penalize sellers for “late” shipment or anything of that nature if the item is shipped but tracking doesnt update for a few days later?

Anyways, it seems like a GREAT program as I can ship internationally and charge my buyers a smaller shipping fee saving 5-10 but making sure that it can qualify!

I use it all the time and my AHOY tracking always updates as soon as USPS scans in the packages, both on Asendia's tracking page and on Etsy's end :0

I use pirate ship simple export rates for international orders whenever possible. The tracking status should update once there is any kind of scan with USPS. But I think Etsy only fetches tracking updates like once a day or something because it’s been behind plenty of times compared to the ascendia tracking page. Either way, the tracking is valid and won’t affect you in a negative way if it doesn’t immediately update. I’ve also had purchase protection cases for late or non-arrival on some simple export rate packages and Etsy covered the refund without issue based on the tracking. There is an occasional bug I’ve found where sometimes Etsy will mark the package as “delivered” once it has arrived at the ascendia distribution center in the US. Out of hundreds of international orders, it’s has only happened a few times, so it’s not a common issue but something to be aware of.

I've been having issues with my USPS First Class International Packages being lost by the local postal service in foreign countries.

Someone recommended Pirate Ship's Simple Export to me as a way of providing affordable international shipping, but I see that it is just a discounted USPS First Class International Shipping Label.

Is this in any way more reliable than what I've been doing? I saw some mention about Pirate Ship using distribution hubs in other countries, but I'm not sure I understand. Does Pirate Ship help to ensure packages actually reaches its final destination in any way? Or are they simply selling me a cheaper version of the same shipping label that will produce the same results?

Hi all! This is kind of a weird question so excuse me for being dumb... 😅

I am in the U.S. and bought my first shipping label with Pirate Ship's Simple Export Rate. I had a Canadian buyer buy a $3.59 sticker sheet (one only lol), and for some "fortunate" reason was willing to pay the +$14.96 shipping cost, bringing the total to $18.01 - for one sticker sheet lol...

So with Pirate Ship's Simple Export Rate, I bought the shipping label for $9.49 only instead of the $14.96. What happens to that remaining amount ($18.01 - $9.49 = $8.52)? Did I make extra money, or does it refund the buyer?

I wouldn't feel right keeping that much extra, so when it's that far off I've always refunded the buyer. But they were willing to pay it in the first place, so it's up to you if you want to keep it as extra money or give a refund.

Looks like the biggest change for me is that international shipments (except Canada) now go to a central US location before being relabeled and shipped to its destination, similar to GSP.

What the announcement didn't mention is how this affects eBay. Presumably PS will upload the initial domestic tracking number, but what about the subsequent one? Or will it just be a single tracking number? They mentioned their numbers start with AHOY which I imagine isn't eBay compatible.

Update: Asendia USA tracking numbers starting with AHOY work correctly with eBay, though they had an issue earlier about items showing "delivered" when they made it to the US sorting center.

I am not a fan of this change at all. Now a package has to spend an extra 2-3 days going to a sorting center in the United States plus however long it takes for them to process the package and send it to the destination country. I don't see how this is better for Pirate Ship since the cost didn't go up but now the package has to be shipped twice. Also I can't see this going over well with my customers. I use exclusively USPS First Class International and the process was very straightforward before. I would expect many messages now from confused buyers wondering why their tracking shows delivered in the United States when they expected it to ship directly to their destination country.

They are using Asendia which is trash.

I am not sure how I feel about this. This week, Pirate Ship switched to using Asendia sorting centers for non-Canada international shipments.

I switched to Pirate Ship BECAUSE etsy was forcing the use of sorting centers while still charging us USPS Retail prices, and I spent days talking to support to resolve glitches. It was not a great experience.

The support page says they are passing on the savings to us, about $0.50 cheaper. Pirate ship has a new support article saying don't worry etsy users, but... I only found out about this after purchasing an international label and being surprised by what printed.

I saw this today too while printing orders and I'm so bummed! The garbage Global Postal shipping is why I switched to Pirate Ship in the first place :-\ My packages kept getting stuck in Elk Grove for weeks and weeks and then suddenly would show up at the customers door with no tracking update which left me high and dry. UGH.

Anyone use Simple Export Rate? I want to ship a $50 gift to a friend overseas. There's a $13 difference cost from shipping it as a First Class Package International (Gift) vs Simple Export Rate (Merchandise). Could I ship the gift with the Simple Export Rate? Would they have to pay taxes and other import fees if I ship this way?

I use the simple export rate. It's treated the same for customs as first class package.

Taxes and import fees have nothing to do with the shipping service.

I just recently enabled this on pirate ship because I am now losing money on my international labels with Etsy. I don't know what is going on but the price customers are being charged is not what the labels cost, especially factoring in the Etsy seller fees. What are people's experiences? I will mostly be using this for Canada orders but I do get EU and Australia orders occasionally. I just purchased a label going to Canada but it is worth more than $40 CAD ($62 CAD exactly). Will I be charged the brokerage fee or does that go to the customer? Am I better off just buying the expensive label and taking the loss? I also noticed pirate ship says customs charges will appear as carrier adjustments so would I have to pay that too? Etsy never charges the Canada buyers taxes so I've always assumed they paid that when they received the package. I am really confused by all of this and wondering if anyone has any insight or advice!

I wanted to note that I read elsewhere before buying that the label would print as a USPS international label but it didn't. The tracking starts with ahoy and is through ascendia.

No, I've not run into this with simple export rate via USPS on Pirate Ship. I've only ever had it happen with UPS.

I've never paid that much postage to Canada, even with insurance. I've always used USPS (with PirateShip) with no issues, and no 'brokerage' fees.

I used it for the first time today and saved almost $30. I feel like I’ve been robbing all my past international customers now haha. Y’all told me it was cheap but I didn’t realize it was this cheap! I’m curious why and how the rates are this low 🤔

the only explanation i might have is that USPS understandably makes it harder to access cheaper shipping prices to the general public, and still is able to make money through their partnership with pirate ship because only small businesses are really using this service so they can charge them the cheapest price that makes it so they don’t lose insane amounts of money, but also gives them business because businesses chose them as an option with their high volume of packages instead of losing them as a customer altogether to other services like fedex or ups. etsy is actually upfront about how just simply using shipping labels can be 30% cheaper than walking into the post office and going through self service or the counter. i might be totally off though LMAO i barely know anything about business but my dad goes on lots of rants about this stuff that i occasionally listen to so i’m hoping this is somewhat on the mark? it’s still a mystery to me LMFAO i barely understand how inflation works

I sent a package to Canada from the us in early March. Customer says it’s still not there. Tracking says it was “handed the last mile” on the 8th of March. Pirate ship says that means the local carrier got the package. Unless the customer can find the package I’m going to suggest they open an Etsy case to get refunded and then just order again. But does the weird tracking number for simple export rate count as “tracking” as far as Etsy is concerned? I want this to be covered under the sellers protection. Thanks!

That's weird, unless pirateship has changed or updated it very recently, their simple export to Canada uses only USPS which includes the standard USPS international tracking number that should start with LZ (not like when you ship to other countries than Canada, then it should start with AHOY which the package would be sent to the Asendia processing facility first), so it should update normally. You can try entering the tracking number to the Canada Post website , it should provide more details. If the tracking number is indeed start with AHOY, then try tracking here: https://a1.asendiausa.com/tracking/ Back to your question, Etsy system should recognize the both the standard USPS international tracking number or the AHOY tracking number (If you manually entered the AHOY tracking number, then carrier should be selected as Asendia USA). If you can see the status of the order is updated (not stuck as pre-shipment) on your completed order page, then it means Etsy recognized it. If you met the other criteria, order value under $250, you shipped on time, etc., then it should qualify for the purchase program program.

I have Etsy integrated into my Pirateship account so it fills In The tracking number for me. The one time I did Simple Export, it got stuck in Los Angeles for like a week, even Pirateship thought Ascendia lost it but it ended up coming back to me because the address was “incorrect”. Thankfully the buyer was super chill and explained that this has happened before when another buyer did Ascendia but she has never had a problem with USPS. The package was going from US to Canada. I explained this to pirate ship and they covered the cost to ship via USPS. After that, no problems with delivery and I stalked that package like a hawk. Never again am I using simple export just for a lower cost.

I've never used any third party shipping label service before. I've always gotten them from eBay or similar websites. Is there anything I should know before using Pirate Ship? The two packages I have to ship are small (less than 1 pound and going in a box/bubble mailer) and they're both staying in the US. If you've bought labels through ebay, it's pretty much the same process. Enter weight and dimensions, pick shipping method, buy label, print.

Synch your EBay store to Pirate ship and click IMPORT every time you have a sale or need to print labels. Your EBay sales will get imported to there and it will automatically add your tracking to EBay for you.

I am planning to offer pirateship's simple export rates for international orders but I was wondering how to handle the tracking number. I doubt ebay accepts the AHOYXXXX number since they couldn't confirm it was delivered via tracking apis.

For others that have used this service, what tracking number do you put into ebay?

If you link eBay to your pirateship account and print labels through the integration, tracking info for international shipment is automatically updated just like domestic shipment. Tracking will be Asendia USA and updated to delivery.

eBay does accept the AHOY numbers. Just copy/paste the AHOY number and select "Asendia USA" as the postal service and it'll track the entire way.

As some may be aware, Etsy has recently sent out warning messages to sellers that mark as shipped but the item hasn’t received a carrier scan.

I received one of those messages and sadly its due to the above.

Simple Export Rate is no longer tracking the USPS scans and only when it is dispatched internationally by Asendia.

This can result in a 10 day delay from being shipped to seeing an official scan via the AHOY tracking number. (The USPS number if typed in can be viewed)

I have also had confused customers also regarding this. Which I have to show them the USPS trackinf which js showing the in transit.

I suspect this has to do with the same API restrictions Etsy also seems to be dealing with where shipped packages through Etsy are not showing updated tracking but it is showing updated on the USPS website since this problem is not unique to Etsy or Ascendia. The USPS is getting ready to deal with a lot of cost cutting / fee increasing measures, I'd bet money this is just one small piece of the puzzle. More than likely Etsy will have to walk back any plans to enforce late scan punishment until this resumes working as normal.

What I do is add the USPS number you get with Pirateship/Asendia, then add the AHOY number as a second package. The USPS number begins tracking right away. I message the customer with the link to the Asendia tracking page and tell them 1. That the USPS number will show movement within the United States, and will be marked "delivered" once it arrives at the international sorting hub and 2. The AHOY number will show movement after it gets to the international sorting hub. The Asendia link shows both of these numbers. So far no one has had anything to say but thank you. I ship 4 or 5 international orders a week.
