There's no equivalent of a .pkpass file for Google Wallet Items. Google Wallet Items are managed online by the Google Wallet system. The impact of this is that there's no thing — besides a link — that can be shared by email or MMS. This is good for managing duplication, perhaps, but (slightly) limits distribution channels to web only.

I read in several places that google wallet should now support pkpass files. I've tried several times to open the downloaded file but my phone keeps showing me that there's no app installed to open the file type.
Anybody has an idea how to fix this?
My phone is Samsung S25 Ultra and Google Wallet version is 25.25.777711705

One user on Telegram told me that Google Wallet is now able to import .pkpass files for them. This doesn't work for me yet, but several users on Twitter told me it does for them! Let me know if this works for you!

I'm confused, maybe because I don't know what .pkpass files are. What sort of situations would I encounter IRL where I might use this feature? I'm not casting shade on this, I just truly don't understand because I have never heard of that file before.

My organisation's travel platform only dishes out tickets in PDF and Pkpass. I currently use Pass2Pay for this so I will be delighted when this rolls out to me!

I know this is not exactly a Pixel related issue but because of the tight integration with Wallet I figured it might fit here.
I finally started using Wallet recently and I've been loving it but I was really bummed out when I realized that it doesn't support .pkpass files.
Half of the tickets/passes I use can't be imported to the app since they only provide .pkpass files. Is there a workaround for this or does maybe Google plan on adding future support for them?

Do you have those tickets in Gmail as a dynamic attachment? Wallet can pull passes from Gmail automatically if you have that turned on. Additionally, do you have the ability to log into that site on your phone and see if there is a "Save to Wallet" icon? If all else fails, you'll need to install a third party app, because Wallet itself doesn't support the actual .pkpass file. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=color.dev.com.tangerine&hl=en_CA&gl=US
