r/AskSF on Reddit: What is the best neighborhood to live in San Francisco?
June 17, 2025 -

I am considering a move to SF and want to go on an exploratory mission to find the right neighborhoods to review. I am here for a week and ready to put boot on the ground. I am a single woman in my 50s and have two small dogs. I want options for eating, nightlife and shopping views of the GG bridge, easy access to other areas -maybe the ability to walk to the water front. Do I have to rely on parks for green spaces? I toured Nob Hill and walked to Chestnut. Everywhere along the route taken was all concrete. There were lots of dogs but little places for them to relief themselves. (Surprisingly clean streets all things considered.) Thank you!

Budget is up to $5K, no roommates. commuting isn't a consideration. Open to all types of housing options (apartment, condo, house.)

Residents of SF! What is your favorite neighborhood in the city to live and why!
I’ve lived in Japantown, North Beach, Nob Hill, Russian Hill, Inner Richmond and Noe Valley. I chose Noe to stay and raise a family, and that’s been great - quiet little Main Street, quieter central neighborhood, it’s literally in the center of a map of the city. But my favorite by far was North Beach in my 20s, it really feels like a city neighborhood - we ran tabs all over the neighborhood and paid them off monthly, we knew every liquor store owner, sandwich maker, bartender, it was just alive with nightlife and personality. Maybe Moving to SF soon, where a good place to find a place to live?
Don’t buy a car. You don’t need one and unless you have a garage, it’s going to get broken into. More on reddit.com

Is it possible to live in San Francisco?
Yeah, definitely. My friend lives in the Haight, a really desirable area, in a one bedroom for $2.1k. To be fair it is small and really more of a studio though. If your partner’s tuition isn’t tied to Starbucks then I would definitely look into getting a different job for them. You shouldn’t be making anything less than $25 per hour in SF and there’s plenty of jobs that will pay you that. You also don’t need a car in SF so if you both have cars I’d look into selling one of them. San Francisco is my favorite city in the world, I highly recommend it. More on reddit.com

2 weeks ago - But beyond the postcards, this ... and new San Francisco. My friend, George Horsfall lives in the blue Painted Lady and gives tours of his house every day at 4:00 PM. People moved on and the row is now “fancier, non-natives, but nice folks,” says George. Today, Alamo Square is a family place, with dogs, ...

The city's Financial District lies to the south of this district. The SF Association of Realtors (SFAR) places the southern boundary of the district several blocks farther north at Broadway (and Pier 9) and includes all of Fisherman's Wharf in its definition of the North Waterfront.
