Some of these might be better fits than others, but here is the general list of native shrubs that I give out to people so you have plenty of options to consider. Some would need more pruning than others, personal favorites would be mock orange, tall oregon grape, California bay laurel, Douglas spirea, osoberry, red flowering currant. If you want something for privacy sooner, consider planting both a shrub and a vine, and install a trellis for the vine to climb a lot faster than a shrub can grow. Pink honeysuckle or orange honeysuckle are native options. -Deciduous shrubs [all are at least full sun to part shade]: red flowering currant (important very early blooms), mock orange, Douglas spirea (great lilac alternative, more aggressive in wetter areas), rose spirea, birch leaf spirea (early blooms), thimbleberry, blackcap raspberry, salmonberry, osoberry (important very early blooms), Nootka rose (can handle mostly shade), snowberry (can handle mostly shade) -Small trees / large shrubs (deciduous): vine maple, ocean spray, serviceberry, red osier dogwood (prefers more moisture), cascara (large shrub to medium tree) -Evergreen shrubs: pacific wax Myrtle, salal, evergreen huckleberry, California bay laurel (gets big or can be hedged), tall Oregon grape, low Oregon grape, ceanothus (tall and short varieties), manzanita, pacific rhododendron (early blooms) Answer from Confident-Peach5349 on reddit.com

r/pnwgardening on Reddit: Tall driveway border plants?
March 19, 2025 -

We have a 3ft wide strip of dirt between our driveway and the fence. The stairs on the right are my neighbor’s and go up to a landing where they like to hang out. I’d like recommendations for a tall skinny tree or shrub, native if possible, that would give us both a little privacy and block some of the afternoon sun on the driveway. I’ve considered bamboo but am worried about it spreading. Thanks for reading!

What type of perennial would work for this driveway?
That’s a very narrow strip and it’s literally an nth away from grass. You might be better off letting the grass fill it in. Many of the other suggestions sound fine, but wont be in the long run. Don’t even bother with shrubs, of any kind, they require too much maintenance for such a limited space and the grass is gonna be a water hog. Besides, shrubbery spreads and it’ll be in your driveway and your lawn. That roll on your lawn is already an issue for mowing….why make it worse? Don’t get too intense with multiple types of plants; something always dies, leaving an unsightly hole. Anything creeping, such as a Thyme would be well suited for this and uniformity is easy. If you want color check into things such as Delosperma, a lovely succulent ground cover which may have near nausea inducing flower colors; i love the shit! Check out the rock garden sections of good nurseries. This situation would be ideal for rock garden and alpine plants. More on reddit.com

February 1, 2024 -

I am planning on planting some perennials in the small strip of dirt/mulch next to our driveway (between the lawn and the driveway). I was thinking about planting one perennial between each pair of rocks. Ideally something that doesn’t grow too tall and adds some color. Would you have any recommendations on what would work? Thanks!

May 18, 2023 - Pollinators love bluemist flower and it mingled well with neighboring sedges and grasses at the edges of my driveway where runoff water is an issue. I also sprinkled in some low care flowering native plants that appreciate runoff including spiderwort (Tradescantia virginiana), Chipola River tickseed (Coreopsis integrifolia), American germander (Teucrium canadense), and obedient plant (Physostegia virginiana). I realize these are all assertive natives but the plants in this strip will be going under mature bushes if they to spread much once the border fills in.
