If you were going to buy only one set of fake food for your toddler, which one would you get!
The Melissa and Doug ones hold up really well, I know there’s debate on if they’re super granola since they’re from china. But they are wood! More on reddit.com
You don’t need the play food for your child to play cooking….
My son has his own play food, but he prefers to use the real thing. So I give him small pots and pans and random things (little toys, balls, magnets, etc.) to cook. He also likes to ‘help’ me when I bake. We make a great big mess and it’s loads of fun. One thing he loves is, I’ll sprinkle some flour on the stove top or counter and let him draw pictures in it. Is wooden play food better than plastic?
Yes — wooden play food is sturdier, safer, and more eco-friendly for kids. It lasts longer, has no harsh chemicals, and feels more realistic. Wooden food sets also look stylish in any playroom and reduce waste compared to plastic.

April 4, 2025 - Great for color sorting, toss games, has multiples of different colors (red/black berries, 3 apple colors, and 2 grape colors). Also great for pretend food and when they’re into play food they like to throw things - I wouldn’t do wooden anything until they’re older.

And that goes for anything really. We used to have a lot of play food but it all got slowly destroyed so I binned it. My three year old is “cooking” for me right now. She’s got a little container from the kitchen, a texta as her spoon and a magnet is the food. But she’s made me bacon, cake, nuggets, and chips. Children have amazing imagination! If you don’t have space for stuff, or can’t afford things? It doesn’t mean your child’s play will be stunted. Because their imagination is wonderful!

Pom poms get great mileage in our house! They’re fantastic for working on fine motor skills by transferring them using tongs, tweezers, spoons or pincer grip.
