I’m looking to buy a high quality play kitchen that will work for both my toddler and my older kid. My youngest is almost 2 and obsessed with pretend cooking, but my 5-year-old also loves playing restaurant and “baking” with play food. I want something that will keep both of them entertained without feeling too babyish for my older one or too complicated for my little one.
I initially considered KidKraft because they seem to have a great reputation for play kitchens, and their designs are really appealing—bright colors, realistic features, and lots of accessories. However, I noticed that their products are manufactured in China and other Asian countries. I know they adhere to strict safety standards and conduct rigorous testing, but I’m still a little hesitant. I’ve been reading more about toy safety lately, and while I’m not usually overly concerned, this feels like a big purchase, and I want to make sure I’m getting something I can feel completely confident about.
I found a Little Tikes plastic kitchen on Craigslist, which would be more affordable, but I’m not sure if it’s as durable or if the plastic concerns me. On the flip side, I’ve seen some beautiful wooden kitchens made in the USA that are super high-quality and non-toxic—but they’re really expensive and, honestly, a little... plain? I know the minimalist designs encourage creativity, but I also want something that’s fun and engaging for my kids.
So, I’d love to hear from other parents: What play kitchen do you have, and what do you like or dislike about it? Did you prioritize safety and durability over aesthetics, or did you find a good balance? Are there any brands or models you’d recommend that check all the boxes—safe, durable, engaging, and visually appealing? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Talk to me about your play kitchens. What do you like, what do you dislike, what do you wish you had known before you made your purchase?
Storage, counter space, buttons and lights, etc!
I’m looking for something under $200. But within that range there seem like too many options! The IKEA ones are so plain but the ones on Amazon seem overwhelming to me. So talk to me about the ones you all have.
