Yes, this is really annoying. They have this option on their website but it doesn't work. I have an app that only works in the older version and I don't want to update it. So they are making me postpone other updates and reducing security for no good reason. Answer from zp-87 on reddit.com

Play Store now allows updating tons of app simultaneously (not just 3 or 4)
It surely shows tons simultaneously but I think it installs them one by one. The downloading may happen simultaneously. More on reddit.com

How often does the Play Store apps auto update?
None of my devices, Pixel phones & Samsung tablets, ever auto update apps and haven't for years. I can go weeks with them on wifi, being used, charging etc and nothing will auto update. Nor android patches/play system updates. More on reddit.com

r/AndroidQuestions on Reddit: How to auto-update selected apps in Google Play Store, instead of all of my apps?
September 14, 2023 -

Hi. I would like to only apply auto-update on a few apps via Google Play Store. Based on the instruction from the official website: https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/113412?hl=en

How to update individual Android apps automatically:

...

Step 7. Turn on Enable auto update.

When updates are available, the app updates automatically. To turn off automatic updates, turn off Enable auto update.

It was supposed to be the solution to my issue. Only enable auto-update to the selected apps, the rest of them don't.

However, when I tried to follow the instructions in step 7, the notifcation came out: "Do you want to update all Android apps automatically?" With two options: "No, thanks" and "Enable".

Seems like the Google Play Store forced me to auto-update all my apps and turn off a few selected apps. But it is just not what I want. I only want to enable auto-update in a few selected apps.

I am using Samsung Galaxy S21 FE (One UI version: 4.1 & Android version: 12) and the Google Play Store version is 37.4.21-29

Many thanks.

I sporadically enter the Play Store -> manage apps and device -> updates available

I see apps that are not auto updated for weeks.

Right now I see more than ten apps. An example, WhatsApp messenger last updated September 26...

What's up with that? Shouldn't it update automatically more often?

I have a Google pixel 6a

Your Android phone is always lying to you: It's not really up to date
April 4, 2025 - You had to wait for Samsung, Motorola, HONOR, Xiaomi, or other companies’ devs to completely test and release a full new software update for your phone, be it a new Android version or just a monthly patch, and it often took months — if not years on cheaper phones. Google had a way of bypassing that a bit through the pre-installed Google Play Services system app, which allowed it to roll some neat new features independently from full software updates, but there’s only so much it could do with just an app.
