Plotly is retiring its R documentation
Sounds like the bigger issue is this: We haven’t maintained these languages or their documentation for several years They haven't been supporting R for a while. The code is still around, but in my experience when a package is no longer actively maintained, eventually there will be some update in R or in some dependency of theirs that breaks it and then you're going to be in trouble. I'd either A) look for a new plotting package alternative and start using that in future projects or B) see if there is a way to leverage the javascript or python plotly packages directly but within R? r/rstats on Reddit: Plotly is retiring its R documentation
September 29, 2025 -

See below quote and link.

This gives me a lump in my stomach. I use the R plotly package every day. I have multiple apps in production within my company using plotly.

What exactly does this mean for the continued support? I gather that the R plotly package will continue to work. We can no longer get good help with ChatGPT? What else?

“…we have decided to take two steps. The first is to retire the documentation for R, MATLAB, Julia, and F#, which will give our team the time to focus on continuing to actively develop and maintain the JavaScript and Python documentation. We haven’t maintained these languages or their documentation for several years, and rather than keeping out-of-date material online to confuse both people and LLMs, we will take it down at the beginning of November 2025. All of the sources will remain in those languages’ repositories on GitHub for reference, and will always be under an open license so that community members can look at it and/or look after it.”

The following shows how to use plotlyProxyInvoke to call plotlys "extendTraces" JS function to add a datapoint to the plot each second:

library(shiny)
library(plotly)

ui <- fluidPage(
  plotlyOutput("linePlot")
)

server <- function(input, output, session) {

  initial_plot <- plot_ly(
    x = 0,
    y = 0,
    type = 'scatter',
    mode = 'lines'
  )

  output$linePlot <- renderPlotly({
    initial_plot
  })

  lineProxy <- plotlyProxy("linePlot", session)

  xData <- reactiveVal(0)
  yData <- reactiveVal(NULL)

  observe({
    invalidateLater(1000)
    isolate(xData(xData()+1))
    yData(runif(n = 1, min = 0, max = 1))
  })

  observe({
    plotlyProxyInvoke(lineProxy, "extendTraces", list(x = list(list(xData())), y = list(list(yData()))), list(0))
  })

}

shinyApp(ui, server)

Also see my related answer here.

Edit: After the example data was explained.

Due to the fact, that your data source is updated only once every 24h I'd like to simplify things. The following solution re-renders the chart every minute (we have got the time for that) based on the latest data:

library(Quandl)
library(plotly)
library(shiny)

theme_set(theme_minimal())

ui <- fluidPage(
  plotlyOutput("yield_chart"),
  tags$style(type="text/css", "#yield_chart.recalculating { opacity: 1.0;"), # comment out to see the graph recalculating
)

server <- function(input, output, session) {

  treas_yields <- reactive({
    invalidateLater(1000*60) # update every minute
    DF <- Quandl("USTREASURY/YIELD", api_key="123xyz")
    subset(DF, `10 YR` != 0)
  })

  output$yield_chart <- renderPlotly({
    print(paste(Sys.time(), "rendering plotly graph"))
    plot_ly(treas_yields(), x = ~Date, y = ~`10 YR`, name = '10 Yr.', type = 'scatter', mode = 'lines', line=list(color='darkred'))
  })

}

shinyApp(ui, server)

Any graph made with the plotly R package is powered by the JavaScript library plotly.js. The plot_ly() function provides a ‘direct’ interface to plotly.js with some additional abstractions to help reduce typing.
