September 22, 2025 - I don’t want a toe-kick on my entertainment center so I didn’t include this in my measurements. If your cabinets will have a face frame, and you want everything to be flush to the floor instead of set back, make accommodations for that in your base dimensions. I built my base out of leftover maple from the sheets that I ripped down on another project. Ripping down a sheet of plywood means that I took a large 8′ x 4′ sheet of wood and cut it into the sizes that I needed for the shelves and cabinets with my saw.

August 11, 2008 - Shane, I recently completed a smallish entertainment center using ¾ ply mdf with maple ply for the sides, top and bottom. However, I used ½ ply veneered with maple for the center vertical pieces. I framed the sides and top with 7/8 inch thick solid maple. I made it with only three "cubbies" and the center has a fake set of three drawers which is really a sliding panel.
