Hi! Anyone here have any discount codes for domain renewals on Porkbun?
Can I use multiple promo codes on a single Porkbun order?
Why isn't my Porkbun promo code working? What are the common reasons for promo code errors?
Are there any restrictions on Porkbun promo codes? (e.g., new customers only, specific products, minimum purchase amount, expiration dates)
Once again, a big thank you we've now grown the sub to over 300 users, Hopefully the sub can continue to grow and we can hit 500 this year.
Its that time again. Is there a website to look these up?
I previously had a one year free domain from WordPress because I bought one of their plans. It's going to expire soon, and I'm planning to transfer the domain to NameCheap or Porkbun because I think they're the cheapest one I've found so far. They're pretty similar in price, around $9/year.
I know it's not a lot but I'm from a third world country where $10 is worth like a few days food lol. I'm always trying to find something cheaper if possible. I tried to check out their Twitter but there's no mention of coupon working currently. Any suggestions?
How are you guys able to register .com domains for cheap these days ?
Please suggest a registrar that is offering working coupons in July/2024 - I highly appreciate guys.
I've been using Namecheap for a long time & liked their platform because of its cheap domains, straightforward UI & guides, free WHOIS privacy protection, and excellent customer support. Now that they have increased their renewal prices to $16.06 (not their fault btw), I'm considering alternatives.
So far, I heard people on Reddit recommending Porkbun and Cloudflare. For those who tried these platforms, are they as good as Namecheap or not? TIA.
So I want to buy a domain for just personal project to share with my team for all I care it could be named "sadsadfdsgds.in or .com " or whatever. Is there any place that provides these domains cause I went on to GoDaddy I asked for a domain for 10 years and the price was high considering the name i put out there. I there any provider who provides these at cheaper prices less than 25$.
EDIT: Not looking for .com specifically anything would work
EDIT:2: I just used cloudflare to buy seven digit .xyz domain that costed me less than a dollar for a year and the same for the renewal.
Thankyou everybody for helping me to come to this decision.
Special thanks to u/davchana
Just wanted to say this isnt Porkbun-I didnt completely understand the backend and based on this post and all the research I did to understand what is going showed me that most people do not know either and even AI wasnt giving me straight answers but I want to clarify this is not a porkbun issue, this is the big corp inflouence controlling the scenerio.
Reddit Post Update – What I Learned About Domain Pricing (And Why It's Not Porkbun's Fault)
Hey all, I wanted to share a breakdown after digging into what I thought was Porkbun jacking up renewal prices. Turns out, it's way deeper than that — and Porkbun isn’t the bad guy here ( as far as I know because i not know who the 3rd entity that owns it but is not listed as owner ) only Porkbun can give us that answer and its not the registry. This applies to Verisign-owned registries only. Here’s what I learned:
💡 What Actually Determines Domain Prices?
There are two main players:
-
Registry: Owns and manages each TLD (.com = Verisign, .ai = Anguilla, .bio = Identity Digital). They set the base price and control “premium” designations.
-
Registrar: Retailers like Porkbun, Cloudflare, GoDaddy — they sell domains to the public, often at or near cost.
Most registrars don’t control renewal pricing. If a domain is marked "premium," it’s almost always set by the registry, not the registrar.
💰 Why Are Some Domains So Expensive?
-
Premium domains are specific names the registry flags as valuable — think single-word, short, or brandable.
-
Some TLDs (like
.store,.tech,.bio) use a low first-year price (like $1–$5) to hook you, then renew at $30–$500+. -
If you see a
.comfor $20 first year and $500 renewal — it was likely tagged “premium” by Verisign.
🔄 Can I Avoid This?
-
Cloudflare is the only registrar that won’t sell premium domains and only offers domains at cost — no markups, no upsells.
-
Porkbun shows premium domains in search results and passes on whatever the registry charges — they’re not profiting on this.
-
Transferring registrars won’t solve the problem if the domain is marked premium at the registry level. Everyone has to honor that price.
🕵️♂️ WHOIS Isn’t Reliable Anymore
A domain can look “unregistered” but still be:
-
Privately owned with WHOIS privacy
-
Flagged as premium and technically unowned, but priced high by the registry
That’s why it might look “available” on WHOIS but cost hundreds or thousands when you try to buy it.
🏛️ Who Really Profits?
If you register a premium domain:
-
You’re still leasing it, not owning it outright.
-
The registry (like Verisign) continues to profit from the renewal price — even if the registrar doesn’t.
-
Premium prices can go up over time, unless locked in (only possible on certain TLDs).
🏴☠️ Squatting Laws Gutted Domain Investing
Laws like the Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act (ACPA) were designed to stop people from holding domains like mazda.com hostage.
BUT the side effect is:
-
Individuals are penalized, even for investing in generic names
-
Corporations and registries now squat instead — tagging names as “premium” and profiting
It didn’t stop squatting — it just shifted the power from individuals to institutions.
🌍 Who Owns What?
-
Verisign runs
.com,.net, and a few others — they’re a near-monopoly, approved by ICANN to raise prices. -
Identity Digital owns over 270 TLDs (.bio, .app, .life) and controls all pricing.
-
.ai is run by the Anguilla government — they profit directly from every registration.
All these registries can tag domains as premium and price them however they want — there’s no real regulation against it.
🧠 Final Thoughts
The dream of finding a great, cheap .com and flipping it is largely gone — the system now favors registries and corporations. Most good names are either premium-priced or already bought.
It’s not just about domains — it reflects a larger pattern:
-
Consolidation of power
-
Wealth flowing to a handful of players
-
Less room for small entrepreneurs to thrive
TL;DR: Porkbun isn’t price gouging — the registry is. We’re not buying domains; we’re renting them from monopolies. And the system is built to favor corporations over individuals.
🎬 Fiction That Mirrors This:
-
Ready Player One – corporate control of virtual space
-
Elysium – rich vs poor divide
-
The Circle – surveillance & digital monopolies
-
Snowpiercer – the elites control the track
Hope this helps others avoid the same confusion I had — and keeps the blame pointed where it belongs.. This corporate greed is huge in current
Hi everyone,
I am comparing prices between providers. For e.g. .sh domains, Porkbun lists a "regular renewal" and a "renewal sale" price. Can someone explain this to me?
Is the "renewal sale" price fixed for life if you buy now, is it just for the first year's renewal, ...?
Thanks in advance. :-)
I was looking to buy a domain for some extra stuff and noticed discount on renew (.cfd) . Will this renew price be used for future renewals too or time limited ?
I am not sure if this is common, but this feels scammy. I started using Porkbun last year and my domains are getting to renewals this year. They did auto-renew a few domains at 3x the registration price (understandable), now one of my domains have been marked as premium. I bought this for USD 32, and now I am being asked to pay over USD 1100 to renew.
I don't think that's fair and their support has not reached back to any emails I sent to them. What kind of business is this? I am seeing spaceship for transfer at USD 32, but I have been reading about their horror stories as well.
WWYD?

I've been with namesilo for at least ten years for the majority of my portfolio. The recent price increase almost forced me to transfer everything to dynadot, until I realized at the last minute that namesilo's discount program is essentially the best price.
The price difference between their regular renewal and the discount program renewal is so large that I wonder if I'm misreading the terms and I'm making a risky decision to stay subscribed to the program. Does anyone have an opinion on this?
Hi! I have a few blog websites hosted with Siteground and previously domains were all with Google ($12/per year). I do not want to switch to Squarespace, so looking for an inexpensive but cost-effective replacement. I've been searching and seeing a lot of deals for $5 for your first year, but renewal is very expensive etc.
Siteground is currently $17 for the first year and $19/per renewal every year, before switching domains to them looking for alternatives and input (domain will be pointed to them for site hosting regardless so something that is easy to configure etc as I am not tech savvy.)
Thank you!
I have the domain pressedent.com, which I no longer need. I would like to give it to someone who would like to get started with self hosting outside their network. Please tell me what you will use it for (comment) , and I will pick a random winner with redditraffler this Wednesday. You will need a Namecheap account to receive the domain, and it expires April 8, 2022.
