What is a belt sander?
Belt sanders are high power tools for sanding, smoothing and leveling rough wood surfaces. Belt sanders operate using two cylindrical drums around which abrasive paper rotates continuously. They are heavy-duty power tools and are great for preparing large surface areas and removing a large quantity of material from flat surfaces but are not suitable for small DIY jobs. Buy the bench top. Then when for some weird reason you absolutely need a handheld one got buy one for $30 at harbor freight and use it twice in the next ten years.

Hi there, I've been researching knife making and I feel like making a knife from a file would be a project I'd like to try and perhaps this will lead into a knife making hobby. I'm debating whether I should purchase a handheld belt sander that I could also use with woodworking projects or purchase a mounted belt sander that likely would only be used for knife making (should I continue to pursue this).
One question I have is that instead of purchasing a standing/mounted belt sander, if it would be viable for a beginning to use a handheld belt sander that's used for woodworking too (perhaps by making a mount/clamp it down)?

If you're extremely patient you could just put together a bevelling jig out of scrap timber (plenty of videos on YouTube) and file them in. Did this for my first knife. Was an 8in chef's knife and it came out quite nice but took ages.

My first few stock removal blades were made with an angle grinder. I think a handheld belt sander would suck at this application though. However, if you KNOW you’re pursuing woodworking, go for it and give it a try. Worst case, now you have a belt sander.
