My portable speaker just died and I'm looking for a replacement for use in my car. Budget is sub-$100. It needs to be loud enough to be heard driving at highway speeds (the car is pretty old so it can get noisy) and also sound decent. I realize nothing at this price point is going to be amazing, but something that doesn't sound harsh, distorted, or hollow would be ideal.
Right now I'm looking at the following, in no particular order:
-JBL Clip 4
-EarFun UBOOM L
-Soundcore Motion 300
-Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 3
-Sony SRS-XB100 (possibly XB13)
Review sites make them all seem like decent choices, but looking at actual user reviews gives me pause. If anyone can make a recommendation I would appreciate it, even if it's something not on the list.
I'm not interested in replacing my stereo, so please don't direct me to r/CarAV.

How can I install Bluetooth speakers in an older car without built-in Bluetooth?
Installing Bluetooth speakers in an older car without built-in Bluetooth can be done by:
- Using a Bluetooth adapter: Connect a Bluetooth receiver to your car's existing stereo system via AUX or RCA inputs.
- Replacing the stereo head unit: Upgrade to a Bluetooth-enabled car stereo that supports wireless audio streaming.
- Installing a Bluetooth speaker system: Some systems come with built-in amplifiers and speakers designed for vehicles like ATVs and cars, which can be mounted and wired directly.
Each option varies in complexity and cost, so consider your comfort with installation or seek professional help for best results.
What features make a Bluetooth speaker suitable for outdoor vehicle use?
Bluetooth speakers designed for outdoor vehicle use, such as ATVs or motorcycles, usually have these important features:
- Weatherproofing: An IPX5 or higher rating protects against water splashes, rain, and dust.
- Durability: Rugged construction to withstand bumps and vibrations during rides.
- Battery Life or Power Source: Long-lasting battery or compatibility with vehicle power (12V systems) for extended use.
- Sound Quality: Clear audio with good bass and treble balance to cut through outdoor noise.
- Connectivity: Reliable Bluetooth version and additional input options for flexibility.
These features ensure the speaker performs well and lasts in outdoor conditions.
