Recommending against this. When it is painted at the factory they will use stain grade wood. They sort cuts where the prettier cuts that look similar to one another go on the stained furniture.  Factory painted furniture might have mismatched tones and cuts that don't look great.  When you get paint off, after lots of time and effort, you may find wood underneath that just looks wrong and does not pop. My personal experience is that "wood" furniture is a completely separate category than upholstered furniture so a lot of negative reviews for furniture relates to upholstered pieces. Have you considered having a local wood shop do a custom unit for you? When I remodeled, I had all of my wood done by a local shop and everything was exactly what I wanted both functionally as well as aesthetically. I have a large wall unit in my office/den as well as a room divider that holds a television on a stripper pole so that it can be viewed on either side by rotating. They also did all of my kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Would you be ordering from a local branch with local delivery? In my experience, this makes a big difference in terms of needing to do returns. If a shop is local and an item is defective, then returning it is pretty simple as you haggle a bit over the return. If it is mail order, it becomes a HUGE hassle because even if they are willing to pay for return shipping, you still have to box it up and figure out a way to get it picked up. I had this issue with a small decorative chest I ordered. Within one week the door felt over (poor construction) and they wanted me to box it up and arrange to have it shipped. It was a long ordeal but I was able to successfully do a charge back because the product was immediately defective and because it was ludicrous for anyone to pay to ship back broken furniture from Los Angeles to New York - but it was completely aggravating.
