If you don't want to reinvent the wheel when you start using Power BI next year there's a couple of things you could do now... start building in PBI desktop and demo progress to stakeholders to gain traction/support now. If you want to publish and share the dashboards, you could run a small user trial with Power BI pro users ($5/month). PBI is using SSAS tabular under the hood. You could model a cube in SSAS now, build a Pentaho, Google Data Studio, or even Excel dashboard over the top to demo your metrics. Then it should be pretty simple to convert to PBI next year when you are ready. More on reddit.com

No catch, you just don’t get access to paid features. Those paid features make it much, much easier to use Power BI in an organizational setting, but if you’re just using it for yourself it’ll be fine.
