Pratt Institute- worth the hype?
All of the Pratt alumni I know are in the types of jobs in the arts that they wanted (design, film, photography, architecture). Seems like graduates do well in their fields. I would ask people on your target field about their opinions of the schools -- they certainly have them. The area is nice and gives you the NYC experience and Manhattan access without having to live in Manhattan, which in undergrad can be a massive distraction from actually working (and ultra expensive in its own right) More on reddit.com

What degrees does Pratt Institute offer?
It's important to note that what makes Pratt stand out is not just the range of their degree programs, but the overall approach to education. The institute heavily emphasizes experiential learning, often through real-world design projects, internships, and collaborative work. More on collegevine.com

Pratt Institute Dual Degree: Art History and Library Science
I went to Pratt, but I became a public librarian. A number of my friends did the dual degree, so I can only offer my perception of the program as an outsider. Pratt's curriculum is slanted towards special/archives work. It's an art school, so there are already many relationships between the institute and the various city cultural institutions. There's opportunities for research/fellowships that professors are involved in, and a lot of course work involves hands-on stuff in partnership with other institutions. IIRC the current Dean used to run the art program. Also, since graduates go on to work in those places, in terms of networking it's probably great. Of the friends I have who did the program, many went on to work at places like Brooklyn Museum, Getty, Beinecke, ArtStor, etc. I don't know if this is representative or if these people were particularly motivated/lucky. A handful of them had experience in clerical-/administrative-level art world jobs before starting the program. That being said, it is stupid expensive. The same people who went on to work those places (and me) are now saddled with debt that it will take a long time to get out from under. Even those who went one to work in prestigious places, probably only made at most high-70k. When you factor in city cost of living and the debt, that isn't that much. Even I, now living upstate, cannot get a credit card because between my student debt and my mortgage, I have too much debt burden. So is it worth it? I really don't know. I loved my work there and think the professors really challenged us to think critically about librarianship. Also, I know that some of my work experience that I got through networking there was responsible for landing me my first job out of grad school. If you're already in the city, though, I would also look at Queens College, the CUNY option. I think their curriculum slants more public, but I can only imagine that they also have at least some relationships just by virtue of being in the city. More on reddit.com

NYC MLIS programs Pratt vs NYU/LIU vs QC
Museum librarian positions are quite rare and competitive even in New York. Just be aware that if that’s your sole interest, you may need to search nationally to find a full-time job. Even then, most jobs are filled from internships and special collections departments, the museums of the academic library world. Librarianship is very much a line of work that is 90% experience and 10% education and the vast majority of jobs are in public libraries or schools. I’d recommend the cheapest program you can find and only stray from that if the program offers hands on experience as part of the curriculum. I work in an academic library on Long Island, DM me if you want to chat. More on reddit.com
