You might also look into if there are cookie decorating classes in your area. I took one that was about $70 to get started, but it was way cheaper than buying all the supplies if I found out I didn't like it. It was fun as well! It would be a really good gift or date. More on reddit.com

Sometime last year, I think for Halloween, I bought a cookie decorating kit.
It did not taste very great lol. I've recently learned how to make sugar cookies as well, and I'd like to do this again, but homemade. Thing is, I've only worked with royal icing, which hardens in its bowl but doesn't actually get hard until hours later. I also haven't really worked with it extensively. What are some nicer frosting options? Also, what kind of equipment might I want? I only have a selection of nozzles and piping bags, which I don't expect anyone else to use very well without making a huge mess.

Cover bowl of icing with a wet paper towel to keep the moisture in place so the icing won't set up. Divide the icing in three colors. Use tumblers to hold piping bags upright to fill them only half way and keep them from running everywhere. Lay the bag flat and use a bowl scraper top push all the air out of the tip before you close the top. Repeat this as they are in use. Use a bread clip, rubber band or twist tie to close the top. Premeasure sprinkles/toppings into paper cupcake liners and distribute half way through. Refill icing as needed. Cover your table with a disposable table cloth to manage the mess. Use paper plates w tape to make clamshells to hold the wet cookies for transport. Have fun!!
