In the 1920s they built a few of these in the Mission and other neighborhoods as well, generally in Spanish Revival style with ornate lobbies. From what I've learned, they stopped being built in the late 20s when city codes prohibited buildings over a certain height in residential neighborhoods. This is why so many of them have a distinct period style. Zero modern amenities, appliances are 40+ years old, still an icebox in the kitchen, bathroom looks like it has not been updated since the building was constructed, unreinforced masonry building, hospital around the corner, intersection of several busyish streets, couple of social services organizations nearby.

I think the sunset is the best of all worlds in SF, especially the inner sunset. Still so close to the rest of the city, easy transit with the N, being right next to the park absolutely cannot be beat, and there’s so much great food. Idk if that budget will get you a single family home (homes in the sunset don’t go up often and get snapped up fast), but I’ve had good experiences with my first home being a condo. There’s so much you have to take care of when you own and when it’s shared you can lean on people who have been doing it a while, and are grandfathered into standard maintenance stuff.
