What does means "pretty" and how can i use it?
Firstly you probably meant to say "What does 'pretty' mean, and how can I use it". Pretty is an adjective that means visually attractive. There is a famous movie called Pretty Woman. Flowers are often described as pretty. It's similar to 'beautiful' but perhaps not quite so intense. As a secondary meaning 'pretty' can be used as an adverb, It's an intensifier, but less strong that 'very'. A runner who is pretty fast can probably beat their buddies in a race, but isn't going to make it to the Olympics. More on reddit.com

The usage of the word pretty is "pretty" confusing - English Language Learners Stack Exchange
I am aware that there are plenty of threads on intensifiers(very, rather, pretty, quite, fairly, etc.), both on this site and on the web, because of their ambiguity in terms of meaning. What I have More on ell.stackexchange.com

Anyone know the meaning behind "Daft Pretty Boys" - Bad Suns?
First time doing this (and quite late, just stumbled upon this sub) but I really like this song so I'll give it a go. The song talks about an encounter between a man and woman at a social setting (bar, party, etc). Though Christo, the vocalist, starts talking about the man in the third person (like he's an outside observer "they look so pretty from afar..."), he later reveals that the encounter was featuring him as the guy (or at least his musical persona for the song: "I've got no time to waste on another pretty face"). I'll just go and do a little more in-depth explanation on each verse since as I said, I really like this song; She's a sunrise dressed like dusk Going out, she's getting into something He's a moth drawn to a flame He's going in, he's going all or nothing They look so pretty from afar Direct start to the song. The girl, dressed in dark clothes, goes out to a party/bar where she catches the eye of a guy (Christo) who will go "all or nothing" since he's instantly drawn to her. Like the gates of heaven are open now And my one true love has just waltzed right out Yeah, there's one thing about me that you should know That I can't help from speaking my mind The first two lines I interpret as intense desire from the man towards the woman; enough so that he'd consider leaving Heaven just to get her back. He can't help but speak his mind, meaning he will -supposedly- confess his "feelings" to her, whatever they might be... There's a dangerous kind of cool about you But she didn't, no, she didn't know nothing Now she swims right past his eyes Where she didn't, no, she didn't find nothing You look so pretty from afar Here he further explains the cause of his attraction towards her physique, but also says the woman, upon walking past him, didn't see anything in him that caught her eye, to the dismay of the man who stands as she walks away. Girl, you waste your time on daft pretty boys With all the time in the world for chasing pretty girls Yeah, you waste your time on daft pretty boys I've got no time to waste on another pretty face, oh I've got no time to waste on another pretty face And here the man, now starting to speak in the first person, lashes out at the woman by saying she only looks for silly, pretty boys instead of the Real Gentleman TM that is Christo, who then says he "doesn't have time to waste on a pretty face". He sure didn't seem to mind wasting his time on her at the start of the song, ahem... There's one thing about me that you should know That I can't help from speaking my mind I don't like you You look so pretty from afar I despise you Why are you so fucking perfect on the outside? Now here is some textbook rejection snapping. Christo, dejected, decides to be "brutally honest" with the girl and tell her how he feels - despising the woman for looking so good and perfect, yet not giving him the time of the day. We can only assume how Christo's musical persona looks in this song, I'm betting it's not very pretty. Like his personality. And then it just fades into the chorus until the end. So, basically, Christo's persona in the song takes a rejection at a bar/party and decides some random girl he doesn't even know needs or wants to know how much he totally doesn't care about her. At all. In the slightest... And that's pretty much it! i really like Bad Suns' first two albums, they've got some really clever lyricism and catchy tunes. Let me know what you think of this. Why Being Called 'Pretty' Isn't A Compliment | The Odyssey Online
August 5, 2020 - It doesn't mean having the perfect nose or perfect teeth. Pretty doesn't mean despising yourself because you don't look like the girl next to you or because someone will never love you. Girls shouldn't have to try any harder to be you because they naturally are you.

It depends on intonation. With a certain, emphatic intonation, Tom looks pretty tired can mean "Tom looks very tired; indeed, his level of tiredness is remarkable." With ordinary intonation, it just means "Tom is moderately tired—tired enough to matter, but his level of tiredness is not especially remarkable."

The emphatic intonation that I have in mind drags out each syllable of pretty to an equally long length, about as long as the word tired. The pitches go something like E D C, like "Three blind mice". Of course, there are many other kinds of intonations and emphasis that a person could give the words, suggesting many different kinds of tiredness, and there is no precise, standardized code. You just improvise.

In written text it isn't easy to tell whether the intended implication of degree adverbs such as pretty or quite or rather is "very" or "a bit". It can only really be guessed from the context. However, in real speech our interpretation of these adverbs depends on the stress we use.

In examples like the Original Poster's, these adverbs are used to modify adjectives. For example:

  • pretty good
  • quite interesting
  • rather long
  • fairly thorough

These adverbs have a meaning of "X, but not very, very X".

There are two parts of this meaning that we can emphasise: the fact that something is X - or the fact that it's not very, very X.

If we stress the adverb, it emphasises that it wasn't very, very good, very interesting, very short, or very thorough:

  • It was pretty good.
  • It was quite interesting.
  • It was rather long.
  • It was fairly thorough.

However, if we stress the adjective, then it emphasises that it was, indeed, X:

  • It was pretty good.
  • It was quite interesting.
  • It was rather long.
  • It was fairly thorough.

In these examples, because we hear the adjective as stressed, our interpretation of these degree adverbs is something similar to very.

Hope this is helpful!

The Definition of Pretty
Pretty is sometimes a threat. “Boys won’t think you’re pretty if you wear that.” If you’re smarter than them. If you eat that last cupcake. If you swear like that. Pretty is when you wash your hair and it falls in shiny and wild tangles around your shoulders.
