Pride and Prejudice will always be my favorite book. I can appreciate that the people behind the 2005 film also love it too although I would say their vision of the book is different than mine. The cinematography is gorgeous. I love the cast- Kiera, Rosamund Pike is lovely, Judi Dench… the reason I don’t like the film is that Bingley is a total mess. Why ever would Darcy be friends with someone so dippy? I think the Mr Collins does a very good job though. Answer from Future_Dog_3156 on reddit.com

UK Vs US' 2005 Pride And Prejudice Endings, Explained | HuffPost UK Entertainment
April 17, 2025 - Director Joe Wright with Keira Knightley during a 2005 press conference for Pride and Prejudice ... “We couldn’t really figure out how to end the movie,” he told the publication. “And we wanted to avoid the kind of cliché wedding scene.” ... So, the filmmakers shot two different finales. The one originally shown in the States involves Lizzie and Darcy smooching passionately, while the British-aired finale shows Keira’s character telling her father about her engagement to her old nemesis. A 2005 New York Times article said that Wright chose to cut the final kiss for Brits after domestic viewers complained about its differences from the original novel’s plot.

The 2005 Pride and Prejudice Movie's Biggest Differences From The Book
August 1, 2023 - The single biggest controversy from Pride & Prejudice 2005 was Joe Wright's decision not to end the movie with a wedding. This is similar to the ending of Fire Island, the LGBTQ+ adaptation of the novel.

Everyone that I’ve talked to about this movie swoons over it but I find it so frustrating. I feel like it represents a very polarized reading of the novel, it flattens out all of the super interesting complexities of the characters and their relationships with each other, and it’s weirdly focused on Keira Knightley’s collar bones (critiquing the male gaze here, not Keira Knightley’s bones. I don’t understand why they took out all of the comedy (especially surrounding Mr. Bennet’s character) and Austen’s classic subtle satire; it made the adaptation pretty boring to me. People seem to love this movie so much that I usually keep this opinion to myself but I gotta know if anyone else out there also thinks this movie sucks.

I’m open to other opinions and I want to understand why people love it so much! If you’re a fan, tell me what you like about it.

Pride and Prejudice Adaptations: A Deep Dive Into a Controversial Topi - Jane Austen articles and blog
July 26, 2020 - From what I have gathered, most people either seem to love the BBC 1995 television version of Pride and Prejudice (in which Colin Firth famously portrays our iconic Mr. Darcy), or they love the 2005 Keira Knightley film version of our favourite novel. I would like to finally settle this highly controversial debate on which version is better.

First off I thought the movie looked great and was acted really well.

I still don't understand what Mr. Darcy's personality is supposed to be. He seems to just be an asshole and then tries to make up for it in the end. I don't know who he is and what Elizabeth sees in him. Is she supposed to like him because he does nice things and likes her in spite of her being poor?. What separates Darcy from Collins?.

Is Elizabeth a manic pixie dream girl?.

I don't think the actor is conventionally that attractive (am I wrong?) and is that intentional?. Doesn't help that I watched Succession first.

Is there more nuance I'm missing and does the book help with this?. Is the Colin Firth tv series better at exploring the character?.

The BBC miniseries definitely does a lot more in the way of character exploration because it's a pretty close adaptation of the book. I've always thought that the story is less about Darcy changing and more Lizzie finding out more about him (and the society she lives in) to change her first impressions of him. I actually think the 2005 version does a better job showing how socially awkward Darcy is.

I really hated the movie when I first watched it, for how badly it seems to connect with the book. I’ve seen it a bunch of times now and barring a few scenes that are just awful on every level (that scene where Elizabeth meets Darcy at Rosings is just cringeworthy in the way it’s shot and edited) I learned to enjoy it as a Pride and Prejudice-flavoured histrom. I do think Macfadyen is attractive, and I like Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth. But Macfadyen has obviously not read the book, and his version of the character is what I like to call Emo Darcy. I am not a fan of Idiot Bingley (book Bingley might not be an intellectual powerhouse but there’s no way book Darcy would ever have the patience for film Bingley, or that Elizabeth would want him for a brother in law. It makes it seem like the Bennet’s really do only want him for his money, since he’s a barely literate moron). They even gave some of Bingley’s clever lines from the book to other characters. Why? It frustrates me beyond measure because Bingley’s brand of intelligence was something I really loved in the book, and his friendship with Darcy is one of the first clues we get that there’s more to Darcy than Elizabeth seems to think! Mrs Bennet was great in this movie, the right level of embarrassing but loving, and her relationship with her daughters felt realistic. I did not like this Mr Bennet, who was warm and caring—it made no sense that this Mr Bennet’s daughters would have the same problems as book Mr Bennet’s daughters. I loved the ball scenes. Pemberley being Chatsworth is the exact opposite of what Jane Austen wanted it to be, opulent and show-offy. Both proposal scenes between Darcy and Elizabeth made no sense, and it was obviously a priority for the film makers to make them sexy rather than coherent. Edit to add: did not like the substitution of the Darcy portrait for a sculpture of his bust. The painting was supposed to show him as he really was, smiling, young, kind and comfortable in his home. To replace that with a blank-faced, marble statue was ironic in a thoughtless way I didn’t appreciate.

5 days ago - Lydia Martin wrote that in contrast to past Pride and Prejudice productions, marketing materials downplayed the "suggested antagonism between the heroes" in favour of highlighting a "romantic relationship", as can be seen with the positioning of the characters as well as the tagline "Sometimes the last person on earth you want to be with is the one you can't be without." That’s not to say I hated the movie or anything, but I couldn’t understand from it why Pride and Prejudice was considered a great story. Only when I read the book in its entirety years later did I get it.[2]Though I still honestly prefer Emma. Many fans of the book who dislike the 2005 movie cite the 1995 BBC miniseries written by Andrew Davies and directed by Simon Langton as the better, more faithful adaptation.

First reason for my dislike of this movie (Kiera Knightly as Elizabeth Bennet) aside, this scene just bugs me to no end. Mr. Bingley coming into Jane’s room while she’s sick and in bed in her nightgown: Never. Happened. AND never. Would’ve. Happened. It’s so inappropriate for the time! A gentleman never would’ve presumed to enter the bedroom of a lady unless he was married to her. And to come in while she’s improperly dressed would be downright scandalous.

Also, if I were Jane and the guy I was crushing on came into my bedroom before I could dress myself and fix my hair/face up a bit, I would’ve been mortified. To be sick on top of that— f I felt bad enough, I wouldn’t want to see him (or him to see me) at all. Dumb scene. They tried to make him look cute in this scene, stumbling over his words, but it really just made him look inconsiderate and rather stupid.

May 10, 2010 - Obviously, this isn’t going to be a huge part of the film itself and is more a characterisation element, but it does bring some of the sexual tension in Pride and Prejudice to light. So, do you need to see them kissing to get that tension? The other point that comes out of this- are American’s more smoochy than the British? Macfadyen (2005’s Darcy) said: “The Brit’s hated it.” when referring to the alternative ending that adds another 8 minutes to the film.

Curious which version of Pride & Prejudice everyone prefers, and why?

Go!

Edit: for me it's the 2005 version, probably because I saw it first and just fell in love with the visuals, atmosphere, music, and Mr Darcy. I have seen the 1995 version once and got super into it towards the second half of it, but the 2005 will forever be magical to me. I've watched nothing else as much as I've watched that film!

We intend to settle the age-old debate: Which Pride and Prejudice adaptation is the best? ... I shouldn’t even have to argue that the 1995 version is superior, but for the sake of convincing Lucy, I will. Full disclosure: I will admit that I do have a bias towards the 1995 version because I grew up watching it and only watched the 2005 version a little while ago.
