I'd like to look into some simple forms of book binding and I'm curious what you use. So far I've used some of the cheaper method like clips or cheap spirals that they offer at most print shops. I've seen others keep their printed sheets of paper in plastic sheets.
For some of my material, especially ones I'd consider finished, I'd want to go with something more book-like. I started looking into book binding, but most of it seems a little too complicated to get into, maybe other than just gluing the pages together, which I'd suspect doesn't have a lasting result.
What do you use for simple, lasting book binding?
Folding together 8 pages at once for binding in center of any group, means put 4 sheets containing 2 pages for any side (front / back) so to have a particular printing order
The first thing we need to know is the total number of pages needed as an integer multiple of the number of signatures we have chosen (8 in our case) ot the last signature will be not one in-octavo and this can cause problems in binding
So, instead of 500 pages we need 504 pages (504/8 is 63 signatures; each composed by 8 pages) that will be juxtaposed at 2 by two like in your diagram:
Now, the imposition order for 504 pages that you want fold in files of 8 pages, will be:

You don't need to manually add the convenient number of pages to your multipage PDF file in order to have an integer multiple of signatures you've chosen, you can automatically calculate and perform imposition with
Multivalent.jar (latest freeware version with tools inside)

the -paper switch is settled to 29.7x21cm assuming your page has size A5, you can easily change this value according your needs, by doubling the width of your page
For different folding you only need to write once the beginning of the imposition sequence that Multivalent will take as a model for other groups of pages. So, for folding 16 pages, you'll write:

You can use pdfbooklet. It's a free and open source app.
Start the app then file > open yourbook.pdf.
Press the Go button.
So the issue is that you don't want to use the booklet imposition function (which is what happens when you use the booklet feature in Acrobat or in any of the suggested pieces of software), but instead you are looking for something that will provide perfect bound imposition.
Booklet imposition reorders the pages so that when they are folded into a booklet, they are in the correct order, but Perfect Bound imposition reorganizes the pages differently. I was able to use InDesign's print preview screen to create an illustration of the difference between the two for a six page document:
What's nice is that once you understand the different types of imposition, it becomes much easier to find tools that might work for you. I googled "free program for perfect binding imposition" and the first two results were programs that you can try for free: Imposition Studio from devalipi and Montax imposer.
If neither of these work, try doing the search yourself and see what else pops up.
So the process of putting your document into booklet form ("printer spreads") is called "imposing" and the minute gutter adjustments needed to account for paper thickness is called "creep."
You need to know how thick your paper is in order to set a creep value. For a larger book, the creep can get out of bounds, and you might need to make several booklets to stack together called "signatures."
There is an open-source pdf processor called pdfbooklet that supports creep.
I have used it in the past (before they included creep feature) to make really cheap perfect bound books for personal use: trim the fold off, clamp and spread the bound edge, smear a bunch of rubber cement and then fabrc tape or painters tape etc to finish the spine.
I was wondering what local places are any good or if there are any online sites that have a better deal/quality.
I was looking at backing these Far Away Land books on kickstarter but I figure with kids a hardcover book would just get ruined. And it is all very expensive.
