I always use UPS because as long as I follow their packing guidelines, they don’t hassle me on insurance claims and I rarely have them in the first place. Never a broken piece and one misplaced package during the winter storms last year. I used to sell antique glass exclusively—usps broke way too many pieces even double boxed and packed professionally and then they’d not pay out without a big fight unless they’d knowingly lost the package or marked it as damaged themselves. All my packages are now 5lbs or more and ups is cheaper on heavier items than the post. USPS quality can be kind of regional I’ve found, some areas are better and I’m way in the boondocks. FedEx will upcharge you ridiculously if you’re off on dimensional/weight at all— even if you’re under what you put in. So I avoid them. Also compare pirate ship and shipping to eBay on UPS labels. They’re sometimes a bit cheaper. Answer from According-Shirt3955 on reddit.com

Ground advantage vs priority mail
This is a good question. Priority mail is really only supposed to make a difference on cross country items (example: NY to CA or FL to OR or NC to AZ, etc). This is why it’s important to pay attention to shipping zones. Pirateship offers good map for this if you google it. Basically if a package is zone 5, zone 6, zone 7, or zone 8, or going outside the lower 48, priority will take air whereas ground advantage will take surface. Priority is 1-3 days and ground is 1-5 days. There is no difference or upside in paying for priority mail over ground advantage when being shipped in zones 1-4. It’s processed together on the same machines, and they count on you to not know that there is no difference between the two in those zones. The only way it makes sense for non-long distance packages is when you’re able to use a flat rate box and save money. Ground advantage does not offer any flat rate boxes. That being said, the difference is minor, and although priority is supposed to be faster it tends to be less reliable than ground advantage. You’re really only talking about a 2 day difference at most for priority, even for cross-country packages. So my businesses all use ground advantage only. When customers want items faster, we use FedEx or UPS two day or next day air, since it’s more reliable and customers who want items fast tend to be willing to pay up for the guaranteed faster service, as opposed to the less reliable USPS priority. We only use priority mail when sending to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, and any other territories, because in those instances ground advantage will take the boat, which takes 15-30 days, and UPS/FEDEX adds a lot of surcharges making it very cost prohibitive to not use USPS….we also use priority when the flat rate boxes can save money on very heavy and dense items. If you’re selling very high value items, some insurance companies require the use of priority and not ground advantage, or only offer limited coverage on ground advantage. More on reddit.com

People also ask

When is Ground Advantage cheaper than Priority Mail?
Ground Advantage is cheaper for most packages, especially lightweight items under 1 lb. The savings increase with distance — Ground Advantage to Zone 8 can be 30-50% cheaper than Priority Mail. However, for packages over 3 lbs going to nearby zones, Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes may actually be cheaper than Ground Advantage by weight.

r/Ebay on Reddit: Is USPS Priority safer than Ground Advantage? which service to use for $100-200 items?
July 28, 2024 -

I have been transitioning from a casual seller to a part time? However since last couple of months I had 2 packages lost that were shipped USPS ground advantage, one almost lost but found after spending several hours on the phone with customer service, another two didn’t marked delivered (one of which was caught in hurricane Beryl). I feel like it’s too stressful and time consuming finding packages, filing claims, dealing with customers, issuing refunds. I have not had any luck with getting insurance out of usps, I file claims and they said they are pending, but already sent me surveys on how the cases have been resolved. I didn’t even got the answer on the final decision. Calling customer service takes hours, etc. I tried offering fedex on my more expensive items, but one time I had extra charge of like $20 for shipping a tie on top of initial $13 I paid. I was able to dispute it with ebay as I sell a lot of ties and have the same packaging for them and they all weight the same. USP seems to me the most expensive option. So I was thinking to start offering priority shipping for my $95 - $299 range items. Is it any safer / faster? What service do you recommend for that price range? Thanks 🙏🏻

Sounds to me like you just have bad usps service in your area. UPS is expensive, so I don't usually use them. They also crush a lot of boxes at my local hub if they are not packed extra well. Maybe you need to package your packages better? My other thought is that depending on the label type you are using, your labels could be falling off! I used to work part-time at UPS on night shift and you wouldn't believe how many people tape regular printer paper labels on with scotch tape or other bad labels that fall off or get ripped easily. If they lose the label they get lost forever. Half sheet avery sticker sheets work OK for inkjet printers, but thermal printer is the way to go and I always make sure the edges are stuck down well.
