Progressive leasing is very new to most markets, so it’s not surprising that the associate you worked with wasn’t 100% clear with how it all works. There is a $80 up front service charge for all Progressive leases that does NOT count toward the lease price of whatever you’re leasing. Obviously without having your screen in front of me, my best guess is that the $600 the App was showing you may be the $500 for the phone and $80 for that upfront charge you paid plus tax? But again, just a best guess. You can absolutely return the phone tomorrow though and get out of the lease if you’re not feeling comfortable with it. I would say a trip into the store to talk to someone in person may be worth your time. You can also contact Progressive directly obviously. Worst case you can return it and get out of the whole thing. Best of luck! Answer from Funesm87 on reddit.com

So do yall recommend the Progressive leasing?
No, I always tell people to go for the BB Card first. 12-24 months no interest financing is always better than even the 90 days of minimal interest with progressive leasing. More on reddit.com

Progressive leasing. What have I done
My understanding is that progressive leasing isn't a true debt, which unfortunately means that if you stop paying you have "stolen" the item and they can take you to civil court to sue for damages. It'll probably be for the remaining value of the lease, plus interest, plus penalties, plus possible legal fees. I think if granted judgment they can garnish wages/bank accounts if you can't pay. Sorry for the bad news, I'm wishing the best for you. More on reddit.com

r/Bestbuy on Reddit: Progressive Leasing misinformation, what are my options?
March 15, 2019 -

Hello everyone I recently went to BestBuy and was told that instead of paying the $500 out of pocket for a new phone I could lease the phone around 40 something dollars a month (with option to pay it off whenever I wanted)

I thought this was a great deal and because I was a good customer at Best Buy and buy all my electronics there that's why I was offered this deal never hearing of it before

( let me clarify something my phone was 750 plus tax which came out to 800 I traded in my phone for 300 and brought the price down to 500)

So I download the app they told me about to manage payments and now the app says I owe 600 more to my phone which I just paid $81 down payment for so my total should have been $419

Now I realize I have been scammed because either Best Buy didn't know what they was talkin about ( they did mention this service was relatively new) the thing they made me sign was through a text message and believing what Best Buy said I did not read any of the print which I understand is a huge mistake on my part

I only did this earlier today. What are my options? Can I return the phone tomorrow? do any of you have experience with something like this? Would I have better experience going to Best Buy where the phone was purchased or calling Progressive Leasing?

Don't want to be ripped off $150 because Best Buy didn't inform me but it looks like that's the case for now

EDIT: the receipt in front of me says the total of the phone so I'm very confused on what changed from talking to the employee and coming home

Hey guys, just an update for you all. I went to Best Buy and explained to them what happened. The manager was very nice once he was called to assist he understood where I was coming from he also explained it's a new program and hes very sorry that I got misinformed. We sorta had a small problem because after he did the return the $300 off I got from trading my phone in (s8 towards the s10e) was a 1 time thing only. He went and called someone on the phone and got me another coupon code and finished the return transaction and then I repurchased the same phone with a debit card. He told me as long as the purchase was under 5 days I would get the money back and the lease is cancelled. He gave me a receipt showing it was returned if I had any problems and he said the money should go back on the card that I did the down payment with. Everything is good to go phone is paid for $488 instead of the $670 in 90 days which is stupid and way cheaper than the $1,100+ if I paid it off in 12 months. Thanks to everyone who replied and gave me info I was very upset last night over losing a bunch of money over misinformation that's why I asked for help with this post. You guys helped me be relieved knowing that everything was gonna get fixed and I applaud you all for it 😀

I know this helps the store's bottom line, but I, as a salesperson, do not want to be the face of fucking over our customers. Even at the lowest amount of $300, they end up paying $706, minus the $79 fee to walk out the door with the merchandise.

It damages my reputation and I make sure to explain to customers what they are getting into before they apply for leasing. And BTW, Progressive Leasing had NO impact on a customer's credit score. They say they will send a letter to the 3 credit agencies at your request, but this has little to no effect to establishing or improving credit.

Unpopular opinion, but I’m a fan of it. I signed up for a progressive lease on my engagement ring, made biweekly payments, kept track of my 90th day like a hawk through their app, and budgeted to pay it off on the check prior to the 90 day option expiring. Obviously, that’s best case scenario, and not every customer will be as vigilant around paying it off aggressively. However, you have to remember, if we are doing our job properly, building a scenario that maximizes opportunity for the customer and run the branded payment app and it’s not improved, we may have burned a customer who could not afford that tv without progressive leasing. As another poster pointed out, they then leave with a bad taste in their mouth and go to rent a center and Aaron’s and lease to lease that product anyways. When used responsibly, this can be an empowering tool for poor to moderate credit customers who want a little luxury in their life. Don’t use it like the Best Buy card, I don’t even mention the 12 month option (instead, I tell them make sure to pay the balance off prior to the 90 day mark, and download the app), and don’t use it for customers that already have the cash in hand (the way you would offer a Best Buy card so they can get the 10% back. In short, encourage people to be responsible and you’ve done the best you can

November 14, 2023 - Absolutely not. If it’s a necesitoe and a need, I always talk about the 90 day payout option but always make sure they know how much they will be paying for an item at the end of it. I say progressive leasing is more for a need not a want.
